Have him check the shift linkage for anything bent, loose/worn, that may be rubbing on something else, and lube the sockets and pivot points.
probably be a good idea to change the oil, make sure he does not use anything with the "energy or resource conserving" in the api seal on the back of the bottle, no car engine oils.
ride it, see if shift quality improves.
