I frequently sign my posts "sanoke" but I've never explained why I do that. When I was stationed in Thailand back in the 70's I got to know some of the Thai people pretty well and they introduced me to the concept of "sanuk" which I learned to pronounce as san-oak and spelled as sanoke. It's one of those words that is difficult to translate so I learned it's meaning by experiencing it.

Imagine a very pleasant summer evening, sitting by a lake at an out door bar, having a few beers and enjoying a pleasant time chatting with friends. There is a gentle breeze blowing and a very nice view. That's "sanuk".

So when I sign a post that way, I'm saying have fun and enjoy your day.

Happy Trails!

Thank you for your explanation, I was wondering.

I try to experience sanuk as often as I can!

Your explanation of 'sanoke' was inspiring. It is what I would like to experience after a nice (or bad) ride or a hard day at work or pretty much because it is welcome. It would be awesome to open a pub/bar by that name.

You are...

Thanks for sharing that...it is an excellent 'concept' to keep in mind and seems very appropriate for riding.

This post is a little bit of sanuk. Thanks!

I think you are full of sanoke.

Love the lake idea with friends. That is up there with riding.

Strangely enough, that etymology never occurred to me, John. Maybe I'll change my online moniker to "sabai."

Glad you didn't use any of the terms you might have picked up at the White Rose Bar in Vientiane. My delicate ears could not take it.

Interesting. I had assumed that you just liked signing your posts with your user name. It never occurred to me that it had a special meaning. Thanks for sharing the story, and the meaning.
