I have the 95 VT1100C2. The only issue I had was battery acid corrosion near the battery vent tube passes through frame (bottom left of battery). I have more than 50k miles. Also check for fork seals (oil on forks). Basically you should be able to tell how well the bike was maintained by service records and general care.

How much difference is there between a 96 model and a 2001 model?

Depends on which model 1100 you are looking at. For instance '96 was the last year the VT1100c had a four speed transmission. Starting in '97 it gained a 5 speed and became known as the Spirit 1100. The tank is slightly different and a few other minor changes but otherwise is the same bike.

If you tell us exactly which models of the 1100 you are looking at someone here will be able to point out the differences for you. Any of the 1100's are great bikes with nearly bulletproof reliability.

All I can say is that I'm deleriously happy with my '99. FWIW, I paid $3200 for it w/6600 mi. on it.

Is it a single pin crank engine? If it's a single pin crank 1100 engine, it could have the guide plug leak issue. Do a serach on it. My old 1999 VT1100C3 had the guide plug leak issue...........

I ride a 97 VT1100C2 ACE. I bought it used with 10,900 miles for aprox $2700. So far the only issue was corrosion in the battery cage as indicated by GDB069, but I replaced the entire cage from Ebay and purchased a sealed battery as well. This took care of the corrosion issue. Other than that, no problems to date. Very happy with my purchase!
