I ride mainly to commute to work, 55 miles each way @ hwy speeds. Last year my limit was 24 deg. or bad road conditions. Texas winters aren't all that bad usually. Heated gloves, windshield, ski pants and mulitple layers keep me on two wheels all year long.

Nothing under 50. Just isn't enjoyable to me. Good thing in Alabama, that leaves 95% of the year to still ride. I get out two or three times a week now. No more commuting though.

I've ridden in the low 20's before, but it was around town, not at highway speeds. As I get (got ) older and presumably wiser, I find that I like to stay a bit warmer.
I sure can relate.

Was 24 on my ride home this morning, just over an hour long (avg 75-80 mph on NY Thruway). Wasn't too bad. The trick is to dress in layers. One to block the wind, one underneath to hold in body heat. Definitely need either heated grips or gloves if I'm gonna continue the commute. Fingers got pretty cold by the time I got home. Other than that the ski pants, snowmobile jacket and Ski-Doo Modular helmet did the job fairly well..

Oh, and the bike was a little stubborn starting after being parked outside in sub freezing temps for 48 hrs. I may have to swap to a lower-weight oil too..

I rode the last three days to work:

Monday - 31 when I left
Tuesday - 27 when I left
Today - 20 when I left

Firstgear thermo jumps suit makes all the difference in the world.
Firstgear Thermo One-Piece Suit - Street Motorcycle - Motorcycle Superstore
Good winter gloves and neck gaiter along with my full face helmet and I am fine.
No windshield on the bike and doing 65 MPH to work for 20 minutes.
Under the suit just jeans and long sleeve shirt.

You can do it but you must have incentive.
Either the incentive to save gas money or the incentive that you really, really enjoy riding.
For me it is both.

God bless!!

Michael

It was 16 when I left home yesterday and 17 today. As long as she will start and other conditions are ok, I will ride. The windshield was worth every last penny I paid for it and the 1st gear one piece outfit works real good. I got a few bugs to work out, cheeks get cold, little cold on the left wrist and finger tips get cool. 25 mile oneway commute, 30 minute ride.
The first 7 miles are the coldest, when I top the mountian it warms a little, when I hit the Interstate I can feel it warm up some more. When I get off the Interstate in town it is even warmer, usually about 15 degrees warmer than at home. That works out real good in the summer when it is 97 degrees in town and 82 at home. Altitude is the key.

Never too cold. I ride all winter, regardless. Coldest I've ever had to deal with was single digits, but I rarely see below mid teens.

Lots of layers, boys. Polar Hands are da bomb.

Winter riding is every bit as great as summer, maybe better. Great sunrises, clear skies. Ride on.
