Default Love - Hate Relationship

I was just reading the thread on pre-ride rituals and it amazed me how many people concern themselves about the fact that their ride could be their last so it got me to thinking and wanting to ask the question. How many of you have a love - hate relationship w/ riding your bike? For example, when I first started riding I dropped the bike and broke my wrist. Thank God it was nothing worse. But, I healed and got back on. The thing is that for the next 5-6 months, I could hardly enjoy the ride for fear of cagers, road debris, my own inexperience, etc causing me to have a serious accident. Yet, day after day, I still couldn't wait to get up, get on and make my daily ride to work. Eventually my nerves and fears calmed down and I got back to enjoying my bike but that experience coupled w/ the pre-ride thread has me wondering if there are people out there riding w/ this same kind of love-hate relationship to their bike. Thoughts??

Love riding, hate not riding. After ~18,000 miles in three years, I am trying to stay in the confident but cautious respectful stage, and hope to keep it there.

I too had a serious accident back about 4 years ago in NC. Shook my pride and confidence, and caused me to second guess the passion I have for bikes.
But then I picked the bike up, dusted off my leathers, put my helmet back on (had been knocked off), picked up what was left of my blinkers, reflectors, tank emblems, and all the other broken pieces off my bike, and left the intersection and rode out of pure adrenaline for another 40 miles before my bike ran hot and died on me. Had to call my ex wife's dad to come get me and the bike.

For me, I've never questioned my want to ride. It's always felt more like a 'need.' I've always been happier when I'm anticipating a lengthy ride with the guys or that moment when we roll up back home after the ride. I agree with what Hondaguy said in the other thread, that if I had to worry to the point that I feared riding, I'd give it up. Being scared and doing anything even relatively dangerous will get you hurt just as bad as inexperience, and often times, both play a huge roll in accidents.

I love my bike and to ride. If I hated it at all, I wouldn't be riding.

I don't know if I'd categorize as hate per se after an accident. After I went down, I delt with moments of spontaneous terror when I'd be going down the road. Still do from time to time. You either work to over come the fear or you retire from riding bikes. The love part of it comes into play when you realize you just can't give up riding even after you deal with the emotional part.

No hate, just respect for what I'm doing...I keep the size of my universe in check and expand it on my terms...I'm enjoying it and I'm comfortable with what I'm doing.

When I T-boned a station wagon and totaled my first bike, a KZ400 Kawasaki, I swore I would never ride again. Two weeks later my roommate pulled up and Kawi 650 and told me I just had to try this thing. Of course, I did. Never was not a very long time.

My first get off will be my last ride way or another. I have always felt that way. I don't even buy collision insurance. Comprehensive yes.
