Default buying first bike

HI I,am thinking about buying a 2001 honda ace 750 . Its has only 1200 miles on it that i beleive to be accurate. THE bike seems to run fine . Is there anything that I should be looking for that may cause problems down the road for a bike this old.Any advise would be appreciated. is offline   Reply With Quote

Your probably gonna need tires right off the bat. Tires that old will be hard as a brick and my have some problems.

Some times a bike that old with that low of miles can be trouble. Seals can dry up from not being used, leaks can start, and the tires are probably original so they need to be replaced right away, tires that old are dangerous.

Get it for a good deal and the rest should work it self out. The bike is practically new. Look at tires for cracks before replacing and perhaps a carb cleaning would be in order. If it runs fine you'll be O.K. Old bikes don't always equal problems.

The owner changed coolant and had mechanic check & ajust carb. HE is asking $3500 for the bike no extras. is offline   Reply With Quote

I have a 2001 nephew, I'm sure he will cause problems down the road. Is there anything I should be looking for?

Super low miles, but it might still run fine. The asking price is a tad high in my opinion, especially if it's bare with no extras.

I think it would be a great first bike. Definitely low ball him, that price is way too high. Start at $2500 but I wouldn't pay more than $3000. First bikes are tough because they're never your last bike. Once you ride it for a year or so you'll be yearning for different one. You'll have a much better idea about what bike will really make you happy.

Older bike does not equal problems, but I can tell you that price is through the roof... around here, this time of year, 12-yr old Shadows (WITH EXTRAS) are running closer to $2K-$2500 range, and sellers will take less because the holidays are coming

Sounds like this guy bought it new and realized riding is not for him, so he's now trying to get a HUGE chunk of his original purchase price back out of it, at the worst time of year to sell a bike! IIRC, wasn't the 2001 MSRP just a tad under $6K, and if he had any rebates or got it on sale, he's got $5K invested in "garage art" that is doing him NO good just sitting there....

1200 miles? hardly broken in, and if the carbs have been cleaned and adjusted, you'll likely have little to do other than tires (guarantee they are original stock Dunlops), and 'maybe' plugs, and an air-filter. Low-ball the offer to see how serious he is... if it were me, I'd start around $1800 and move up from there. Keep looking though, I'm sure you can find one with some extras and new tires on it for the $2500 range... sure it will have more miles on it... but these things run forever (if you take care of them a little bit).

Good luck!
