1970-something Honda CB350.

Wires shorted out under gas tank and I got to watch it burn on the side of the highway.

Then I had to get a ride home and tell my dad *his* motorcycle went up in flames.

Yeah... he was not happy.

Keep em coming! My second and third bikes,Suzuki 80 and Honda SL350. The Suzuki replaced my NSU and the Honda I bought when I got out of the Navy in 1970. The pics aren't the actual bikes but the SL350 was the same color. I really liked that bike! I was mostly riding dirt back then!

1959 125cc BSA Bantam was my first ever bike and I can still smell that little two stroke on certain occasions. It got me into bikes, dirt only back then. My first foray onto the real road was a Yamaha FS1E in the summer of 1977. Flat out it would show 54.5 mph on the flat, remember how that .5 mph would get you past your mates bikes ? I skimmed the head, polished the ports, cut the baffle and a whole host of other magazine advised lunacy but never saw more than an honest 58.5mph. I miss those days so bad. They were so innocent. Slip streaming was an art form that has been sadly lost amongst those who strive to get to the pub first and thus avoid the dreaded "first round" It was always last man in payed back then

It wasn't long after that that we all kind of split off. The 50cc bikes that were our first legal road machines were replaced by 185 Suzukis, Yamaha RD250's and the like. The sport was lost because invariably the bigger capacity bike won the day. The riding skill of honing those little 50 cc to their maximum speed was scoffed up in how much money you could afford to out do each other and that's where the death toll started. RIP Jimmy Miles on your 500 Four, Ian Thomas on your 750 Boiler, John James on your wickedly fast 750 Kawasaki H1 and to all the other friends I have lost to the wonderful feeling of being at one with the world on a motorcycle. Live on and ride my friends, in my mind we are still on those little Yamahas racing to the great pub in the sky with one arm tucked under your body for that extra 1/2 mph.
