Default Put-up or walk??

I'm sorta looking for a larger bike and noticed on Craigsl--t an '86' Honda Shadow 1100 with 58k km on it for $1295 as is, (it pops out of 3rd when driving), or fixed for $2695.I don't mind doing the tranny work but what will it cost for parts?? My best guess would be worn syncros or gear teeth or the guide gone, or is the $2695 worth the extra?? Should I do the work or should I just look elsewhere for a possible better deal??

just my opinion that's but i don't think it's a good deal to spend almost $3k for a bike like that. i assure you that you will find a better 1100 for about the same price. example.

1995 HONDA SHADOW ACE 1100

i personally would find something else. There are lots of bikes out there for sale. But if this is one that you want and you want to fix it up, go online and try to find a repair manual for this model and see what all you will need for the repair. I know the area i live in, western ky, you can find bikes all day long for 3000.00. I purchased a 97 honda shadow vt1100c spirit with 16xxx for 2600.oo. The bike looks like it belongs in a showroom. KEEP LOOKING? good luck.

There are a lot of good low mileage bikes out there cheap right now. I would walk away from that one. I paid $2500 for my 02 Shadow Sabre 1100 with 6600 miles on it and it had a few extras.

I would walk rather than buy a bike with that type of issue. Although you may be able to fix that particular problem, who knows what else will crop up causing you endless angst.

Unless you like projects. NEVER buy a vehicle, that needs fixing. I promise if it needs $1500 worth of work they are telling you about, there another $1000-2000 worth they haven't even looked for.

I would NOT pay more than $2000 for even a mint 1986 Shadow, much less one with 60K on the clock and known shifter issues. IF that were the ONLY problem I might offer something LESS than the $1295 and do the repair, myself. But at 60K, and considering known issues, I'm more concerned about the Valve train, ignition, charging systems and the MOTOR. At 60K it needs the tranny and shifter worked on anyway. I'd bet you could fix the 3rd gear issue for under $100. The 3 gear thing could just be mis-adjusted or worn clutch. Unless it is the GEARs itself, fixing the shifter is relativly cheap.
With $2500 you should be able to find plenty of better bikes. IMO at VT1100 is not a Large bike. Unless you are comparing it to a Rebel, maybe a VLX sized bike. But $2500-3000 should fetch a near mint Shadow in the 5-15 year old range. Shop newer, and unless you are dead set on a VT1100, don't limit your search to Shadows or even Cruisers for that matter. $3000 buys more bike, when you are looking at more that just Cruisers.

Don't walk, run. That's way overpriced for a bike of that age, mileage, and condition. No doubt others will offer similar examples, but I bought my '99 Shadow, with only 6K on it for $3200; and that was not exceptional in my shopping experience. That's 14 years newer, 52K fewer miles, for only $500 more. Do NOT buy that bike.

Best case, you buy it in "fixed" condition and it runs perfectly. It's still overpriced. Worst case, you buy it unfixed, then spend weeks or months working on it (and $$$ on parts) when you should be riding it.

Patience, grasshopper. Great deals on great bikes are out there. This isn't one of them.
