Never use the bike to commute anymore. Just enjoy the three or four rides a year that I take. Love being alone on a highway in the middle of nowhere. When I retire, the 3 or 4 will be more like 7 or 8.

I ride because I can. That's all I care about as far as the bike is concerned.

By the way, clearly I'm talking about a Harley, and I probably put around 20K miles a year on her if I were keeping track. For the past 30 years or so, most of the guys I ride with--if they were counting the miles, which they probably don't--ride at least that much. Some guys are on baggers, a few are on Ducatis (for rides of maybe a few hundred miles), but most are on cruisers like mine, other Dynas, and a few Softails. They ride all over the U.S., again mostly because they can. And most are younger than I am, so that's why I'd guess their mileage is higher.

We don't exactly spend our time keeping track. Which is why I took exception to that earlier Honda v. Harley thread. I knew someone was gonna say that Harleys mostly are poser bikes, ridden mostly for week-end bar-hopping. That's B.S. among most of us.

And why compare? Okay, I hope I'm done.

Good question - But unless the bike is the only means of transportation that a person has I can't think of how it saves anyone any money. Yes they do get better gas mileage than most vehicles, but most people who ride also take the "long way" to places they are going...which negates the savings...Plus the upkeep of the bike (insurance, tires, oil changes, etc)... not to mention the insurance.
So with that being said I got mine because I always wanted one...and I use it for pleasure rides and commuting.

I started riding 4 years ago becauae of rising gas prices. I continue to ride because of the gas prices and because I enjoy it a great deal.

The same way women can be both angry and happy, disappointed and satisfied, sleepy and needy, smiling and deadly. Just the nature of the species.
