Default Parking lot Etiquette

Ok, from a recent thread, we had some discussion about parking in the striped areas at. The front of the parking lots.

First pic is what I do.

Second pic is an asshhole.

There are plenty of spots to park without crowding a possible wheel chair exit.

I came out from the grocery store the other night and there was another bike sharing my spot. He was facing the other direction so we leaned opposite ways. Worked out well. He came out while I was trying to fit all the food in the saddlebags and we had a nice talk about riding.

The last cop I asked, said that parking lots are under the control of the owner. They don't count as streets. You can park anywhere the management is ok with. The lines are simply the management communicating their preferences to you. Fire lanes are different, but normally it's all between you and the store management.

It does help to chat it up with them every once in a while.

I would suggest that you check with someone that actually knows how the laws are enforced. Try checking with the local prosecuting attorney's office. Handicapped parking spaces in many states can be enforced even if the property owner doesn't want it. I have known of many occasions when the property owner was ticketed for parking in handicapped spaces. Often they think it is a way to reserve a parking space for them, and they figure that since they are required to have handicapped spaces, it works good. Unless they are handicapped, that doesn't work.

BTW.... Normally parking lots are part of a requirement when building a business building. Most localities have stiff requirements on how parking spaces are layed out. The lines are not thee for the benefit of the owner.

Like I said, check with the local authorities, and I don't mean a local police officer. I spent 10 years as a LEO and I know what the laws in VA are, and it isn't what you seem to think. I had many cases of people parking in handicapped spaces, and I gave them tickets. Not only can handicapped spaces be enforced, but stop signs also, if the parking lot is used as a thoroughfare. Drunk driving and reckless driving also are enforced on private property.

I can tell you that in the 10 years I spent in law enforcement, I was just amazed how many police officers, and their supervisors too, don't know the laws. I even had attorneys ask me questions before court.

Obviously, you can park where ever you want, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Not so.......Parking in a Fire Lane or parking in a Disabled Parking area without a valid handicapped placard are both state law violations. Property owners have no control over those two violations. Those are the only two violations that you can be cited for by law enforcement on private property.

That is one of the worst comments you can make. The laws vary from state to state, so those comments can get real expensive. Here in VA, there are other laws that can be enforced, like DUI, Reckless Driving, and under certain conditions stop signs.

Keep in mind that handicapped violations can get very expensive. Here it used to be a $25 fine if paid out of court. The judge used $250 as his minimum fine. Last I heard I think it had grown to $500 or more.
