Had a bad start to a long weekend last night. Rode the motorcycle to work yesterday and on my way home from work I got rear ended while sitting g at a red light downtown. The guy hit me and knocked me and my bike into a parked car. Luckily I leave plenty of room between me and the vehicle Infront of me when I'm at a light. The other guy admitted fault right away and called his insurance to get things started on a claim, he said he dropped his phone and wasn't paying attention. I don't have any immediate injury just that I can tell other than my neck and upper back is a bit soar today. My rear fender and tail light is trashed and I have a coolant leak now possibly cracked the overflow. I did ride the bike home after the accident but it didn't feel right, I'll have to have the bike looked at real good and get a estimate to find out what else might be damaged. All that work over the winter to get this bike looking and running good gone is 1 second over a guy messing with his phone while driving, but I consider myself lucky it could have been alot worse.
You can get another bike just as long as you are doing o.k.
Glad that you came out of that only being sore, look at it this way
you might get some new bling out of this!
Glad to see you and the bike will be ok! I'm reading about members of the brotherhood getting involved in accidents way way too much! I really dont understand what the obsession is with people dicking with their phone while driving! When I'm forced to cage it my phone is in my pocket where it belongs.
Dropped his phone, right. He was looking at the keypad and texting.
I did a great, two-day, on road safety class earlier this summer. One thing the emphasized was to check your mirrors every 5-6 seconds. At the time of the famous Hurt Report there were virtually no incidences of motorcycles being hit from behind. With the advent of cell phones that has all changed and there are now very significant number of rear end collisions.
It was a total surprise. I regularly check my mirrors while I'm at a light but this time he wasn't in my mirror when I checked it. That area has short blocks and roadside parking, he came off the cross street after I checked my mirror I think. Im just glad I'm ok and I was riding solo when it happened, quite often I have my 9 year old grandson on the back seat. Thankfully I was on my way home from work so I had no passenger but it's obvious to me the good Lord was lookin out for me cause as you all said it could have been alot worse.
Hey, while moving you have a chance to avoid a cager, which is why I always fear those coming up behind me at a light.
I had an old lady switch lanes on my yesterday and try and take me out; if she had not put on her turn signal I may have been in an accident myself. She at least warned me to get out of her way. She realized afterward that she almost hit me, as she didn't know I was there until after I beeped my horn.
Glad all is well so far. It is amazing how many people do not look when they are driving, although I do admit that some of these new SUVs and other cars have horrible blind spots. I avoid being next to cars I always stagger because I am afraid thy will try to merge with me. When I come to a stop I actually have my bike at a slight angle towards my escape route. I feel this is helpfull if I see someone coming or get hit I can be flung somewhere safer like a grass median or shoulder instead of becoming a human sandwich between cars.
Glad to hear you weren't hurt worse! I ALWAYS recommend going to the hospital to get "checked out" anyway. That way, their insurance can't claim that whatever hurts on you later wasn't a previous injury. They tend to do that to get out of paying claims, even when they admit they were at fault. It's all a scam to get your money and keep it! Stuff, bikes included, can be replaced or "upgraded" to bigger and better ones, but you only got ONE life and body, and there are no "spare parts" for it! You've got to take care of it!! Hope you and the bike are back to 'normal' again soon!!
I agree with @ABQ-Jammer , it would be a good idea to get checked out, just to CYA... For now, though, the heck with the bike, you can be dancing a jig, burning some sage, and sending up thanks.
Yikes, it is disheartening to see yer' baby all dinged up. Like you, though, I ride with a passenger much of the time and I share your sentiment that thank goodness you were alone.
Just noticing your 'Louavull' location...I was at Ft. Knox in the late 70's...some good memories at some places around there.
As you say, "It couldda been a LOT Worse!" I agree...
I`m always seeing what OTHER things people are doing whilst operating a motor vehicle ; IT IS SCAREY!!!
Glad to hear it was not total for either of you!!! Get checked. Have the bike and your body inspected for damage.
I am always nervous at a stop especially in a left turn lane and even with a cushion in front I never know which direction I would want to jump away - Into oncoming cars on the left, or those going by on the right. Scary.
I put on an additional 4 second blinking brake light and when at a stop, when a car is slowing down behind me, I hit the brake lever again and hopefully get everybody's attention.
Didn't feel right, and no rim damage?
My money is on bent axle. Relatively easy, here's hoping!
Glad you're well!
I won't tell you to get checked, because you have a mom and I'm not she...
But it couldn't hurt... :grin2:
That's my worry too, being rear ended. There is someone rear ended DAILY at the intersect both next to my house and next to my office, they're unavoidable, high traffic corners and 'theys a scarie'.

Don't think I have a bent axle thankfully. The impact bent my rear fender behind the mounts obviously, but being pushed in like it was it folded the fender at the mounts causing the portion of fender Infront of the mounts raised up slightly raising and tilting my seat which mounts to the fender. I believe that caused the feeling of feeling a bit off the norm. But to be sure if made arrangements with my favorite local shop to get the rear end checked and work with the insurance to get it right if it's more than a bent fender.
Sorry to hear that @bigolepit ! Glad you are okay. That is something that I think about EVERY time I pull up to a stoplight or stop sign. I usually try to pull up at a slight angle in case someone did hit me from behind in hopes that they would knock me off to the side before they made a sandwich out of me and the car in front of me.
Glad to hear you are ok, pending check up. That is why people using phones while driving get to hear and see things they didn't expect. However, I do have to admit that I use my phone when I am in the car. The big difference is my wife is driving. Nothing anyone does on the phone is more important than other people's stuff and lives. If that call is so damned important, pull over, spend the one or two minutes you need to make the call. Better you spend one or two minutes on the side of the road than I spend even one second in the hospital.
Glad you were not significantly injured. I would get checked out just to document your soreness. Might help with settlement issues as well. Praying for your quick recovery and a hassle free settlement.
dont rush to a medical settlement this can be an ongoig increasing intensity issue. i got hit by a dog (i know but it ran into the front fork on my 350 yamaha) back in 77. i thought i was fine and i limped the bike home too. did go ahead and settle with the dogs owners insurance (mistake)
check out the statute of limitations and then wait it out as long as you can. do not sign a medical release just to get your bike back on the road.
but do your due diligence and get accurate advice from a lawyer
hope this post is not a prediction of the future (i still have issues from that incident)
Glad you are ok and the guy was not going faster.. Here, most bikes split lanes and go to the front of the line if possible. To avoid stuff like this. I am not sure if it is legal every where. I too worry until a vehicle stops behind me to block the next vehicle. The others have offered a lot of great advise.
Yup, first get yourself checked out, then get the bike checked out by a pro. If it didn't "feel right" chances are something is wrong, either a rim, forks, tire, ... whatever? Not safe until you know it's safe.
Great news you're going to ride again soon, though!
How did he drop it if he was driving? More likely he was using it, texting, dialing, talking, it doesn't matter-he was not driving. So for his unsafe actions you pay the price, I would get checked out too just to be sure, and make sure your bike gets more than the rear end checked. I'd say ride safe but that's getting harder to do nowadays.
Dingo.
