ACE vs. Aero vs. Spirit

Hey All,

New to the forumn and don't have a Shadow yet. Currently riding a CX500c that I bought for my wife but would like to get her something with a little lower seat height than the CX. I keep running into the different model Shadows but having a hard time keeping the real differences seperated in my mind. Can any one tell me what the real major differences between these models are. Also, I like the Shaft Drive on my CX and I know that some years of the Shadow were done in Shaft Drive. As I am shopping on your forumn or craigslist, is there an easy way to know which years are shaft drive since a lot of people don't list it. We are more into the Cruiser style, windshield, bags, and backrest so not sure if that will make a difference on what model to get either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the Aero in all years is shaft drive. Others I'm not so sure. As far as the add-on bags, shields and back rest, none came with them in stock form. They had to be added by the owner or dealer but stock will not have them no matter which model. Good luck in the hunt.

How much has your wife ridden and how tall is she?
I have an ACE 750. Its chain drive and the seat height is pretty low. However it is wide too. My wife is 5'4" and cant stand flatfooted on it due more to the width. She was uncomfortable trying to hold it sitting still so, we got her a VLX to learn on. Its not that much smaller than the ACE but it is a lot narrower.
Here is a side by side shot:

It all depends upon which AERO, Spirit, and ACE you are talking about. All three were always shaft drive in the 1100 series, and I believe, the spirit, and ACE were/are chain driven in the 750 models, with the AERO being shaft drive. My ACE Tourer is a bit different, being the only one that came from the factory with both hardbags, and windshield. Hard to go wrong with any of them, though.-----Metalguy

If you are looking to get your wife a bike and you like the drive shaft then you might look at the 07 750 spirit which came out with the shaft drive. the older models were chain driven. Plus the seat is narrow and low so she would have no problem sitting on also has a 5 speed tranny where as the vtx 600 has a 4 speed. The 750 ace is chain driven and the 750 areo is shaft but they both have wide seats.

Can't help you with the 750s but here's some info on 1100s from this thread:

The 1998-2000 VT1100C3 and 1995-1999 regular ACE are single crankpin models, all other 1100s are dual crankpin
And here's a site that will get you a side-by-side comparison of two different models of your choosing.
