I ran out of gas one night and had to push my bike about 100 yards to the station. Some people riding a brand that must not be named were at the gas station getting gas. They were laughing at me and making comments about needing to fill up with rice etc and so on. I don't mind ribbing, it's silly to run out of gas, but they went way overboard about my brand. Then i noticed they were wearing silent skull cuts...I thought silent skulls were suppose to be silent - anyway, in this little tale, the brands were never really the issue, the people were. Just because these people were obnoxious, does not mean everyone who rides this brand or that will be the same. We all know that, so i think the rules could be loosened a bit, and everyone could use good judgement.

As far as the other brand disscussions/ribbing I think we should lighten up though I don't need bash any brand to feel superior or good cause already own a Shadow!

Long live the "old guard"!

No disdain for the old guard. Quite a bit for the attitude and sense of entitlement that seems to be prevalent in a handful of them, though. I'm sure they feel the same about me too. I'm okay with that. I've got nothing to hide though, so no need for a PM.

At first, I thought 100% might be the easiest way to go. But after thinking on it a bit, I'm not so sure.

Things can quickly get out of hand sometimes, but should we just let people duke it out? Personally, I think it is annoying sifting through a thread for information or entertainment, then find a post that starts off good then turns into a flame war. I'm sure this is what the mods are trying to keep at bay. If I see a fire, though, I just move on to something else.

I guess it also depends on how much time the admins have to police the site. It seems like it would be easier to let a fire burn out than watch every post that might be offensive. Fires usually are just a flash in the pan, but it is annoying to have a website full of fires to read through. Maybe it would be easier for the admins to delete fires after they start? I don't know.

One problem I see is that when reading a post or email, sometimes it is difficult to see the emotion and ribbing coming through. That is what the little yellow faces on the side of the screen are for.

So in the end, I guess my vote has changed to opening the gates a little more, but where is the line? Everybody has a different level of tolerance to someone picking on their brand. It's a hard call, and I'm sure the admins will make the right decision. However, I do firmly believe that things such as politics and religion should be off limits. That is WAY too touchy!

My 2 pennies.

lmao..now thats funny.

i think there should be some leeway on this...we can refrain from the outright bashing of brand x.,but seriously have you seen the comments on any youtube vid from brand x riders about jap bikes?..they dont give a rata$% about what they say on vids thats not brand x..i know by us not bashing theirs were being the bigger person, but alls fair.
i ride what i ride cause i cant afford a brand x bike...had i found one for 1800$ that was an 03 with 4k miles on it,,oh hell yeah,,,but theres not even 70's models of brand x for less then 4k unless its an absolute pile of parts...one day i hope to have one but not in this life time..unless i win the lottery, which according to statistics, they say youre more likely to get bite by a shark then winning the lottery,so being i live no where near an ocean anymore,i guess thats even out of a question..lol

let me just add to this,, the only problem i have about the brand is the price and how everything from a baby's bib to aftermarket accessories that has anything to do with the brand is outrageous..and to hear riders of brand x claim American made, the parts are assembled in the US but not all parts are made here, some are shipped from overseas..so they are NOT American Made, they are America Assembled. only rich people can afford to own one and maintain it,our bikes however are cheaper to buy, accessorize and maintain and still we have just as much fun on them as riders of brand x. but one day id still love to be able to buy one.

Why is it such a big deal. If someone has an opinion, and feels a certain brand sucks, who cares. It's just that, an opinion. This place is way too uptight. A LOT more leeway is needed here. It's like having to walk on egg shells. It's a flippin bike forum, for grown ups. The administration insists we where diapers. It's not needed.

When you have to edit someone's post, because they say something is retarded, it's lame. It's a slang word, big deal. OMG, it might offend someone. Well maybe I'm offended by being told I can't use the word retarded. Ppl's opinions are ok here, as long as you agree w/ them. Otherwise, forget it.

Now, if I were to call someone a retard, that would be different. That's a personal attack and I would expect action taken. But if someone posts something that is ridiculous, and I agree and say, yeah that's pretty retarded, it's completely different.

It's time to loosen up here, other wise the members here are going to get tired of being treated like a 5 y/o and move on. You may care, you may not. This place is nothing w/o members. You all keep pissing them off, and you'll have nothing.

Personally, I think it's great because I can now use the "new posts" tab without having to sift through all the off topic.

Regarding Harley bashing, why is it not allowed in the first place? I can't imagine there are any members here who would really care one way or the other. If the only people who have a problem with it are the ones who are concerned that someone else might have a problem with it, is it really a problem? I'm all for making a change to allow brand bashing. If someone thinks Harley sucks, I'm interested to hear why. If I don't agree, big deal. Happens a lot around here. I don't think you'll be able to do it on a case by case basis or allow exceptions, though. "Good natured ribbing" is very subjective. Imagine xxxxxxx posts a thread that he feels falls under the "ribbing" exception but is deemed by the moderators as brand bashing. Do you want to have to deal with the backlash when he and all the rest of the "old guard" band together to cry foul? And then, of course, I'll have to jump in and poke the bear. Next thing you know, you've got another 30 page thread that has to be locked because you're trying to turn the site into a "police state". It would be interesting for me either way but all or none seems to be the only way to do it without having to waste a lot of your time.

Its funny how you are in a thread asking if brand bashing should be aloud but you feel it is necessary to "bash" a member .

if you have nothing to hide please tell us who you where when you got banned from this site before.

I don't have a problem with people who don't like Harleys anymore than people who don't like Honda bikes, to each their own. As someone who owns a Yama and a Harley I just think that when people turn opinion into universal fact, on either side of the equation or denigrate the decisions of others, are saying a lot more about themselves than they are the subject. To me it looks stupid.

It kinda comes down to the question when I see someone bashing brands of either that person is the smartest person in the world on this issue and everyone else is mistaken or the person is a misinformed opinionated oaf who is putting their own bigotry and ignorance on display for the world to see. Its hard to stop stupid, but you can ignore it.

If it's something you would say to anyones face in mixed company it should be acceptable.

My name and address is up there for all to see..come to that town centre and most people know me..look me up in the phone book..I'm easy to find..If someone objects to things I write they can find me..

Not so many of you can say that..

All right got the answers I needed, even with some sad trolling attempts thrown in for good measure.

All right, we will give it a try and make an adjustments to the board policy. We will try allowing the good natured type of bantering that many say they can do when it comes to the Harley Davidson brand. Keep in mind though that the line is quite thin about what will be tolerated, and if your attempt is to do nothing but troll the forum it will be dealt with.
