Default out of gas for the first time ever... surprisingly low MPG?

well, ran out of gas for the first time ever, thank God for reserves, and was somewhat surprised at only having gotten 103 miles out of my supposedly 3.7 gallon tank. scooted to my nearest sheetz and filled up to 3.1 gallons, and scooted home wondering how i got this low of MPG when i was told i should be getting a good 35-50 out of the bike.

i have a honda shadow 750, 2005. is this MPG average, am i shifting at too high of RPMs, am i doing something wrong?

not 100% sure... definitely added 3.1 gallons today, so me and my tripometer will see if i'm just slightly inept at refueling

What kind of riding are you doing? My 08 Spirit 750 gets about 50 in the city but is significantly less if i'm running a lot of highway speeds.

If you were told 35-50 and you went 103mi, 3.1 gal fuel, then you are pretty near 35mpg which is on the low end of what you were told.

At least you had some left in the reserve, and weren't too far away from a gas station. There was one time I ran the tank dry, had to push the sucker home about 2km in the rain..not so fun, since then I've kept a very close eye on my tank lol.

It happened to me when I started riding using higher revs. It seemed like my milage got cut in half. I ran out on the superslab but reserve saved me from a long embarrassing walk. I went back to conservative riding and refilling at 100 mi.

I run out at 150 miles on a tank pretty consistently. Left it get to reserve the first couple times I filled up so I had a good idea as to when to expect a trip to the pumps.

Dumb a$$ moment though the second time I rode my bike, after the dealer delivered it to me, and after I swear I heard him say it came with a full tank of gas at delivery, I had to hit reserve after only 40 miles on the odometer. Hmmmmm really bad gas mileage or the dealer didn't fill it? Actually stupidity on my part for not checking myself.
