Default Chaps?

As a new rider I'm wondering what is the purpose of chaps? IMHO I think they look kinda silly. Are they really worth the cost?

To protect your legs from flying debris or in the event of a crash. Also for warmth in the cold.

if you go down and slide for a distance without chaps on your jeans aren't gonna fare to well,,,chaps add another layer of protection and has saved numerous people from severe road rash...i used to wear mine 100% of the time when i rode..now it depends,,in town if its not cold, speeds less then 40,no...if i know im going a distance at 65-70 plus,,yes.

Cost varies so much I can't really answer that part, but when I first got my bike I swore that I would never wear chaps. I thought they looked silly too. But when I was given a pair and I wore them a couple of times when the weather was cool or when there was a light rain shower I became a convert. Suddenly they don't look silly anymore. try leatherup.com they have good prices. Also they make womens butts look good.

Default Chaps & Armor

I wear both chaps and armor. The armor in in some thin lycra, and even on the hottest summer day, does not add warmth to the riding attire.

And you think nothing else about you riding a big toy looks silly?

They work great for blocking the wind on a cold winter day. That's what I use them for.

And if you really want to keep from wearing them, just think "Village People".

Jeans, khakis, and shorts will not protect you from road rash. Period. Chaps will, as will dedicated riding pants. That is their purpose in the same way that a helmet protects your head.

i wear my chaps anytime i'm going futher than a mile. not only do they keep my legs warm and protected, but come summer, you can wear nothing under them and set a nudist fashion statement/get arrested

oh, and check craigslist. got a nearly new set for 20$
