Default bar size, vlx

Anyone know for sure what OD the bars on a 97 vlx are? The motorcycle bar chart thing doesn't show my year but i'm assuming they are 1" like the 99?

Also to anyone that's put bars on a 97, how much leeway do we have with these before i need new cables? I'd like to get maybe some 8" rise mini apes but not if i have to redo all cables. The stock rise on the bars is 6" so i was thinking maybe i'd be able to get away with these other bars.

not sure on the leeway of the cables for how high we can go,but the bars are 1"..i believe from 88^ is 1" bars..the prior years are 7/8"....id like to eventually put some mini apes on mine as well, but dont want to have to replace all the cables either,so let me know what you can get by with if you do them.

This is a good question. I've been looking at some Z bars and a few others and I'm wondering if how far I can stretch it upwards myself. I really like the chump bars from Low brow or the frisco's,but I'm going to have to do some serious measuring....

Well I changed my mind....As soon as I saw these bars on Sinful Cycle Parts. I snatched them up....Couldn't wait any longer. These fit with all stock controls and they were under 115$ shipped to my door, so I'm happy. It's the only real big expense that I'm doing with this bike besides fix and ride! I'll post pics when I put them on!!!

keep an eye out for cracks,as they are one piece bars..some folks on here that has the one piece bars on their bikes has said theyve found cracks in them...not saying these will crack, but just keep an eye on them...they look good on the bike in the pic though.

THese gusset mini apes, the first ones on the page are the ones i'm thinking of getting.

Voodoo Vintage Fabrication - Austin, Texas - Products

Just trying to decide how high. I wish they had a little more pull back to them too but he says on the page he'll customize them for you and the price is right so maybe i'll bite. I'm thinking i'll go 8inch. I'll update once i bite the bullet, i've spent so much money on other stuff so far though during my bobber conversion it might be awhile.

I've never changed out bars before, i like my current grips, they are reusable i hope? Any tricks for getting them off?
