Indy

Do you have a neat stuff in your house that is valuable? There is probably a good chance that you leave the house unlocked as well too. Perhaps you could post your address on here and when a bunch of folks from here are riding through your area we could stop in...have a few beers...rifle through the wife's skivvy drawer and leave the toilet seat up.

I just hate it when somebody's idea (BRC) of how things must be gets in the way of common sense. I've been riding close to 50 years now and many hundreds of thousands of miles and I've never had that happen to me. When I want to turn off the bike, I turn off the key, pull it out and stick it in my pocket. What makes more sense than that?

I really don't even understand why we have kill switches. If only it worked and fired some kind of rocket it would make more sense. Ive been riding over 40 years and can't remember a time when I needed it. Perhaps if you had your bike stolen a couple times it would make an impression that you need to take the key. You might be able to rig a buzzer to buz when the kill switch was used.

Ouch! Been there, done that...go from "that biker" to "that moron" in the instant you find yourself scrambling to pull your leg from under the bike....hard on the left knee...and the ego.

I turn my bike off by putting the kickstand down. Reach down and pull out the key.
It ain't rocket science.

When ever I get off my bike, I always check that the bike key is in my pocket. You can always tie a piece of string to the key and pu a loop on th eother end and loop it over your hand. If you leave the key in the string will remind you when you try to walk away.

Unless you don't have any tape.

Just put a piece of tape, electrical works best, over the kill switch.

When you go to push it your brain should ask you the question, "Why is there a piece of electrical tape over my kill switch?" And then you say to yourself, "Oh, jeez, I need to shut of the engine with the key and not the kill switch!"

Of course, in an emergency (which is basically why that switch is there) a little piece of tape over it isn't going to stop the switch from functioning.

Hey, it worked for me. Now I don't need that little piece of tape over my kill switch anymore because I'm a trained puppy. Well, maybe not a puppy.

Now, if I could just remember to put the side stand down before I get off my bike!
Very good idea this is, better than simply saying "Stop using the kill switch" as, telling some one just to stop using the kill switch is the same as telling some one to stop forgetting their key(s) in the ignition - no offense to any one, just pointing out the obvious.

I always kill my bike with the switch, followed by an immediate key twist to off and, while I'm down there I also turn my petcock to off, and while I have my keys in hand I also lock the forks - can't lock the forks if you forget the key Just my routine shut down though.
The only times I've forgotten my keys in the bike (maybe 3-4 times tops) was when I was parking the bike inside.

I know one time when I was parking at work that I had set my keys down on the saddle to remove my helmet and gloves..I ended up going inside briefly before realizing I didn't have my keys, left them in plain view for some one to have a free bike. Never did that again.

Possible scenario when one leaves key in ignition -

"Hello, is this the XYZ insurance company?" A: "Yes. How can I help you?" "My bike just got stolen and I need to submit a claim." A: "Sorry to hear that your bike got stolen. Did you leave the key in the ignition?" "Yes, I always leave my key in the ignition." A: "That's too bad. According to your policy, leaving the key in the ignition voids the policy and we will not pay for the loss of your bike." "You have to be kidding me!" A: "No sir, sucks to be you. Have a nice day. Bye."

Yep, kickstand down, shut off bike and remove key.
