I take it by overdrive you mean drive shaft..

don't touch the top cap.

the bottom bolt is the drain the next one up is the filler..

You fill it until it reaches the bottom of the filler bolt.

John.

My wife and I just did 1500 miles with a max of 400 mile days from mi to ny and back riding 2 up on our '85 vt500 with no problems. You'll be fine! Enjoy!

Doesn't sound right. I have an 87 VT700. I changed the Hypoid oil in mine and never had that problem. Did you use Hypoid oil?

Wow. Nice find man. Barn/garage stored?
I got my barn stored 85 500 for 200 bucks. 20000km on it. Just needed a little tlc that I did mostly myself.

Hopefully you got a similar deal. These old shadows can be found in great condition for pocket change if you have the will to find em.

A 500 mile trip at freeway speeds (or higher) is no problem. Look at where your redline is... I probably wouldn't run at redline all that time, but half or 3/4 is no big deal. The bike is meant to be ridden... go ride it and have a blast It's only the sound that gets ya wondering... trust your tach
