Default How many bought a Shadow because you couldn't afford a ???

So how many here bought a Shadow because you couldn't afford a different bike? I guess I wouldn't say couldn't afford, more as couldn't bring yourself to spend that much. I will admit, if someone else was footing the bill for either bike, i would probably opt for a Soft tail Fxst or something, although if i ever test drove one I may change my mind... I just couldn't bring myself to part with $12K when I got mine for $5K

I'll admit, my current bike, a 700c 84 Shadow was free, but as a weekend warrior sort of rider, I don't have the time to invest in a more expensive bike. And do enjoy the ride my Shadow provides. Sure, I'd like more engine, or different looks at times. But over all, I like my Shadow. It meets, not just my needs, but it also is right at my 'ride' level. I've seen too many guys get in trouble with more bike then they could handle. Or who went from too small a bike, and jumped into an expensive ride only to do something stupid.

My 99 750 ACE was given to me. I wan't looking for a bike, I had a 250 Rebel I was happy with. Money is definitely a factor.

i bought mine, because they are the best bikes on the road. this is my ninth Shadow. each time i buy one i resell it at a good profit, So anytime you can buy something and ride it a year , resell for a profit. you can't go wrong, Also out of all nine the most that i have done to any of them is oil changes and replaced a few tires...

I bought a couple of VT700s because they were cheap..but you get what you pay for, one was an '84 and the other an '86, none of the parts were transferable from one to the other, so I had to fit new brake shoes, replacement master cylinders, braided clutch hose, clutch slave repair kit, front and rear tires, sparkplugs and several other bits just to get the '86 one going..then I bought a '93 VT1100c cheapish new water pump, fuel and air filters, sparkplugs, front and rear tires, carb repair kits and two diaphragms, and I'm still working on it..but even at that price I am slightly ahead of the game and both bikes will be safe to ride..Shadows are light to handle and hard to fall off, I've ridden a lot worse..Would I rather have a Harley, not really..but a nice shaft drive Harley might be another story..

John.

Definitely price at first. I paid $1500 for It as a temp bike till I found one that I "really" wanted. Now I have stopped looking.

Honda puts alot of money into R&D and their racing programs, and have always had some of the newest technology.
I dont have a lot of money, but enough to ride what ever I want, and the Honda is it. if I want bigger I'll get a Sabre or VTX. I also have a polaris and a yamaha dirt bike.

If I had to do it all over again......I would have still gone with a Shadow. But, I would have gone with a 750. But, overall Im happy with my 600.

I could afford more, just couldn't justify paying more for a 'toy'. Sure, it's transportation, but so is the truck I leave sitting it the driveway. Gas savings, sure, but off weighed by the extra insurance. I could buy the 750, mod the hell out if it and still be cheaper then any other bike I was looking at. The dependablity played in of course, but a 1300 or 1800 was more money and higher insurance costs then I wanted to spend.
