Default Ethanol

I have heard horror stories of a fellow with a shadow who used gasoline from the pump that was 15% ethanol.

Over the course of 10-20k miles, the ethanol held in H2O and it in turn rotted out his rubber tubes and made a wreck of his cylinders.

Anyone else hear things similar? Or how to prevent it?

Along with that, what % ethanol is in the fuel at the pumps around the US?

10% ethanol in most pumps around the states. It will be changing to 15% soon tho.

Actually the 15% ethanol is on hold. Car and motorcycle manufacturers put up a stink. As far as the horror story that waseither an exageration or a made-up or a friend told a friend ect ect. We/ve been using 10% ethanol in Chicago for many years and the only bad thing was some lose of mpg and a gummed up carb or two becuase the gas didn't have a stabilizer. Unless something changes the rest of the country will probably go ethanol in the next couple of years.

15% is on the way. Ethanol actually suspends water instead of allowing it to separate and settle to the bottom. If left sitting It will eat anything rubber and plastic.

there's a bottle of additive my bike shop recommended that you add a little bit to each fill, and it supposedly reduces or removes the effects of ethanol on the bike parts, but i cant for the life of me remember what it's called

STA-BIL has a new ethanol treatment product. I have no idea how good it is.

This is interesting. Never knew they made the straight ethanol treatment. Does anyone know if this is a different blend from the marine sta-bil? The marine states it is an ethanol treatment as well.

My general feeling is that as long as you are using the bike you are probably OK..but if you leave it parked up for a month or more you may end up with a coating of varnish inside your carbs..

I don't like the stuff and think all filling stations should give us the choice of buying straight gas / petrol..

yeah, 10% ethanol is enough. I can't believe there is a push for higher... well, I can believe it because it's a corn product.

There are a few gas stations around that advertise 'No ethanol' gas, but it's not a place I'd ride to just to fill up.
