I'd be in too. After a couple of oil changes on your own you're ahead.

A Haynes manual is $20, is writen for a 5th grader to understand and supplies equivelent of a 4 year degree in MC mechanics. Save your money a Download a free copy on the Web. You are talking about paying $160 for about as much info as you get in your typical auto repair comercial.

Let's see ...
$160/6 = $25.83/hour for instruction
Oil change by dealer: $75.00

From the net ...
I have to pay $84 an hour for service....
I believe here in MA service is $85-95/hour at a dealer...
$100/hour - New York (Long Island)
Honda VTX to the local Honda stealer and gets charged $130 an hour.
I mean, it's over $100 for a friggin' oil change here
It's about $95-$105 per hour in the SF Bay Area.
Chesapeake H-D Md. Hourly rate - $78

maintenance class. You bring your bike in they show you how to do basic things like change the oil, check/change the filter, change the plugs, bleed the fluids, clean & adjust the chain, battery maintenance, valve adjustment...etc

Its a 6 hour course and they charge $160. I have almost zero knowledge about motorcycle maintenance...do you think this class is worth taking?

It's worth it, even if just to learn the right way to adjust the chain, freeplay in the brake and clutch cables, and brake maintenance. A manual is great but your level of experience, seeing it 'live' would be most beneficial.

Defiantly wise to DIY! Learn all you can! 160 bucks = knowledge that you will have for the rest of your life. That knowledge will pay off big time! Don't be afraid to dig in and get dirty. The guys on this forum have gotten me out of all kinds of stuff with my bike.

Dave.

If you buy a manual I highly recommend getting the factory one . Clymer Haynes and others dont compare . It was the best 75 bux I spent on my bike .

Its all relative to what is valuble to you.If I wash and clean my Expedition it takes 3 hours Minium for me to do the Job.I take it to the Full service car wash and 10 Guys jump on my car like Rats on cheese and get the Job done in 1/2 hr.I gladly pay the 20 bucks for this service as it saved me 2.5 hrs of my time.

Not only is the knowledge key, but because you are bringing in your own ride, most likely, you will walk away with a fresh oil change, new plugs, and everything else cleaned and tuned... Win/Win...
Is it $160 plus supplies, or does that include supplies, if it was offered around her, I'd jump on it!
