Default Tools?

Can someone give me a simple list of tools I would need to do basic maintenance on my Shadow 750. ie: Change the oil, take off the front wheel, adjust & maintain the chain...etc. I'd like to go to sears and get all my tool shopping in one trip.

What are some essential tools to have? Or maybe someone knows of a good set to buy. I believe all the sizes on shadows are metric?

I don't think you'll EVER get everything you'll need in one trip. Every time I do something else to my bike, I have to go buy another tool.

As far as the oil change goes, get a ratcheting wrench and and oil filter wrench.

Everything is metric.

Look on ebay or a Honda dealer. You can get the specific model kit for about $50 with a little pouch and store it on bike, Its not elaborate but it will do most everything. Also a wrench for the oil filter is nice to have since you will do that frequently.

or check the left side panel and you may find a plastic box containing the tools.

A cheater bar or a 5lb sledgehammer for the oil change if the last guy who changed the oil gorilla-torqued the drain plug...

Plug spanner, long shaft cross point and flat blade screwdrivers, a flexy shaft screwdriver with changable heads, good 1/2" drive socket set, extention bars to reach deep in to those elusive nuts, some sort of tommy bar (a tube for extending the length of the wrench handle.) allen keys, trolley jack, torque wrench, hammer and rubber mallet, oil filter wrench, set of metric open ended and ring spanners, cheap multimeter, set of jumper leads with small clips, needle pliers..extendable magnet...That should do most jobs but you will still have to go out for WD40, or spray lubricant, oil, coolant, hydrolic fluid, filters, touch up paint, repair kits and hose clips..and you can bet your last dime that when you need that last little thing that you have forgotten the store will be closed..

I also have a portable scaffold tower that I can surround my bike with and tie support ropes to it so that the bike can't fall over..but that might be going too far..

John.

I recently picked up a set of 3/8" drive sockets with metric allen wrench ends. Love 'em.

sears has a 3/8 drive ratchet marketed under their companion brand that the handle extends on. Working as a truck mechanic after I bought that I never had to dig for my breaker bar again. Extend it, break the bolt loose, collapse it and run the bolt out.
I also use it as a lug wrench for my trailer. 2 years of heavy use and no problems.
Best $20.00 I spent on tools.

dgraves - any chance you can find that socket wrench with the extendable handle at sears and post a link, or name? I've searched there and don't see it. Sounds like a very useful tool. Thanks!

i have found that i've needed just about every size mm wrench/socket from 8 to 19.

i found a set that had both large size and stubby size metric and standard wrenches.

an oil filter wrench is a must. and of course an oil pan...
