I was 16 when I bought my first project bike, a '75 CB250G for $80. It was being held together with baling wire and duct tape (no joke) and quite a few people thought it was a waste of money. Even the guy I bought it from assumed I was buying it for parts. Engine still ran and only needed a carb rebuild and new exhaust to get it running smooth, the exhaust pipes were badly cracked and dented, left fork was bent, the wiring was a mess, speedometer broken, a dozen other little things, plus the south Florida sun had not been kind to the seat and paint.

Thankfully I got the manual and I knew a couple of motorcyclists in my area that gave me plenty of good advice, especially a custom trike builder named Fungus (R.I.P.).
Six months later I drove up to the guy I bought it from and he had no idea it was the rattle trap I had bought from him. I had it running and looking like new, even down to the stripes on the tank.

So yeah, give him a chance and be supportive. I would buy him a manual for the bike as a show of faith in him and to get him started on the right foot. He might just surprise you.

I'd never let my daughter on the back of a crotch rocket to begin with, totaled or brand new. I've never let a passenger on the back of a sport bike if I'm driving. Those bikes to me should be rider only.. JMO.

Anything can be fixed & if I were you I would help wrench on it to make sure he knows whats up. Just saying dont ride that to your daughter never works. Idk how old they are but if the relationship is one thats long term getting a similar hobby helps keep the family close thats why i introduced my inlaws to camping/wheeling.

Don't bash him, help him. Make sure it is safe and reliable. Your daughter is going to ride with him, like it or not. At least, if you're involved in the rebuild, you will know it is safe. I'm old, got kids, grand kids now, believe me, she will ride with him if they stay together.... Just saying.

those old gixxers are pretty cool...

$600 wouldn't be worth it for me. i like to tinker and fix things up. i have the resources and ability to get parts. i just don't think it would be worth the money, effort, or the time. it might be worth it to him, but i could find several things i would rather spend $600 on.

but anyways... it's his time/money/effort... hope he get's the gixxer lookin' good again.

Well. If he ever wants to build a sprint car he has the motor.

Default Why Not?

My son picked this Gixxer 1000 up, trashed, busted all to h3ll, used as a stunter, for next to nothing... never built a bike before. Rebuilt it, rode it for the summer, and traded it for an '02 Mercedes. Support the kid, IMO... after all, two wheels is two wheels, and the thrill of the build is the same no matter what the brand or style

I completely agree...You are not going to stop her from riding, be it that bike or another bike. If you support him, you might actually be able to teach him something...and that in itself could be a GREAT thing...
