Just a little rant.
Several of us are planning our yearly 7 day road trip, and myself and another guy are planning to buy GoPro HD Cameras to record our entire ride. After some thought the other guy decides that there is no point in both of us getting one and he said to me he wasn't going to buy it if I get one. I then told him that I'm not going to invest in the camera and all the accessories that go along with it (which could reach $600) and then just give him a copy of the trip and bare all the expense. What would you guys do? Bare all the expense and then be generous with the video, or say hey I just spent X amount and if you want a copy give me say $$ for me doing all the work.

How many riders? Take the 600 you would be spending, cut that in half, and divide by the number of riders and ask for a "donation" to help with the cost of equipment and your time to edit the video. Let them know you are not trying to make money, but would like to recoup a little of your cost invested in all the equipment, not to mention all your time to edit the video into something they would want to watch.
So if you have 30 riders going on the trip that would a 10 dollar donation for the video. If it was me, and I was good friends with everyone in the group, I would just suck it up and give everyone the video after I was done editing it. The Go Pro camera is a great investment and can be used for all kinds of video taking, not just motorcycle riding.

WEll it's not like it's a one time use camera. You could sell a few copies and then the camera will pay for itself over the years.could be a good investment .

How much would you have spent if your friend also got a camera? Were you going to try and recoup some of your costs if the other guy also got a camera? If these really are friends, then don't sweat the price. Get what you can afford, shoot what you want to shoot, and share what you want to share when you're done. You'll use the camera for a lot of other things after this trip.

With a friend like you, these guys don't need enemies.
You want them to help pay for a camera that you are going to have for a long time after this trip. You want to make money from friends for your toy, and then charge them for something that you were going to do anyway. It cost what...a few dollar for a big pile of CD's, and a little time to copy them. Selfish? Maybe. Cheap, definitely. Friendly? Not at all.

I think my little handlebar camera cost about $30 and takes a 16gb micro sd card..it might not be as good as a $600 camera but it works good enough for me...

I don't think it's about making money. For me I just have trouble with the guy I ride with saying, dang, i'm not buying one now, I'll just get it from you and save my money. I understand that there will be many great opportunities to take more video in other places and that will be great. I'd just be looking for a little compensation for the effort and some of the cost. One of the only reasons I'm getting the camera is because we all wish we had video of the last trip we did last year and don't want to feel the same way this year.

There you are...now you can all afford cameras and get different viewpoints and splice them all together for a great film.. John.

Look at a camera called a Kodak Playsport. I have one and it only cost me 100 bucks brand new. They have the exact same quality as the GoPro (1080p and everything), but area way cheaper. Then you can get a 20 dollar mount called a FatGecko that can mount to anything. Plus the Playsport has an LCD screen and has a lot of features that the GoPro doesnt have. Let me know what you think about it
