Default Community College MC Parking

The community college where I work has this parking rule for motorcycles that I do not agree with but must comply with. You have to park in specially marked parking spots only...or in 'hash marks.' Motorcycles can not park in regular 'car' parking. This, even though you display a parking permit, pay taxes/tags, and have a license.

I was recently pointed to the hash marks between two handicap parking spots by the security guard. They do issue tickets for $5 or $10 if you park your motorcycle in a car spot.

I suggest checking state law. In Michigan the hash marks between handicap parking spots are reserved to allow room for lift vans to operate. On most lift vans the lift ramp deploys to the passenger side, a bike parked in the hashed zone would block the deployment. Parking in this area gets the same ticket as if you parked in the designated handicapped spot.

Regarding the designated motorcycle parking, I can't say I see anything wrong with that, and if there is space there I would use it.

Yeah, don't take Robocops advice on parking in the hash mark areas. Check the law to make sure. Then again, college campus police have their own jurisdiction as well.

They said it's OK to park there and you have it in writing. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Actually I believe the handicap hash areas are the same in all states...They are put there for the lifts and easier access for the handicapped.

As far as the parking in a parking spot issues, check with local leo's...I believe that may be incorrect as well...but I would totally check on that with both leo's and then with security...pointing out the laws....NICELY

They have designated motorcycle parking at my community college, but not a single bike ever uses it. It's way out in the back of the parking lot.

They don't give us tickets for using the regular spaces though. We aren't even required to have a parking permit since there's not really a space to put one on a bike. They just said it's a good idea, because if it get tipped over, they can find the owner by the number on the parking tag.

Keep in mind that at any college parking is usually very short supply. That's probably the driving force behind this rule.

Now, if you pay the same amount for your permit as the car drivers do....I think you have a legit beef.

My school encourages rides to park on the sidewalk at the front door. No permit required.

Wait...the ticket refers to a motorcycle that is grey in color. Not even your bike? At least it was a warning ticket and you've been given the go ahead to park in the handicap hash mark area.
