Dismounting before crashing IS crashing.. ride it out, don't panic, don't BRAKE, hold but don't FIGHT the handlebars , let it bring itself down to a more controllable condition and bring it to the side of the road. Again your biggest obstacle in this situation is PANIC.

I've been down more times than I can count on my dirt bike. Never on my cruiser, (knock on wood). I could say that I have a lot of experience at crashing, but for some reason, practice doesn't make perfect on this one.

I used to love to jump my bike and get a bunch of air! Tearing through berms, fun, fun, fun! Until I did a superman slide over the handle bars and broke my collar bone. Not so fun. Boys will be boys, right?

Now I just enjoy the ride, I wear protective gear all the time. It's saved my @$$ more than once in the dirt. There just is no right way to crash. Tumble, tuck, roll, slide, and pray..........

I had a Mexican in a Pickup pull out in ft of me when I was doing 55 mph when I was in HS.I ran into the back of the truck and ended up in the bed.The Ft fender peled back and stopped at the forks and I broke the back of the seat Pod off my GS 425.I took off the ft fender and rode it home with a Cracked Clavicle. That was in 1984.
In 1988 I was on my Buddys Interceptor on Post and a Old Blue Hair came across 4 lanes of traffic and I pulled too much ft brake and slid to a stop on my side. The MP's chased her down but didnt do anything as She actually didnt hit me just forced me off the road. The Last crash in 1988 was me VS the HP and the HP officer won by tapping me in the tire with his car at 80+ going around a curve. The Quick stop in the back of the truck was better than the road rash suffered in the other 2

A cop actually did a pit maneuver when you were on your bike?
Seems like that was a bit over kill. Did he get in trouble for it?

LOL my best turtle slaying was my old 2.5 ton service truck, doing 65 on a back road, popped over a rise and had nailed an old 18" tortise before it registerd with me what it was. All I saw in the rearview was chunks.

A couple weeks ago when I was riding out to meet "Uncle Charlie" I smashed a turtle. There was an Explorer slowing down in front of me and there was a highway work truck on the opposite side of the road with it yellow lights flashing. I was slowing down to stay back from the Explorer as I was getting closer a guy from the work truck was standing in the opposite lane and suddenly I caught the site of a turtle just before I hit it. Then I seen the guy in the road throw his arms up in my peripheral vision. I guess he was going to save the turtle and the Explorer wanted to make sure they didn't run over it and was braking and slowing down. I felt a bump and heard its shell pop. Oops. I would have went around it had I seen it. There was too much going on with the Explorer breaking and a guy standing in the road that I was watching the guy and the Explorer and didn't see the turtle until it was too late to even react.

We don't want to smash turtles!

As far as crashing, I have done it twice. Luckily, nothing serious. So I may not be the most experienced at crashing.
But what I learned from both, is that when you go down, you have zero control until you stop.
Try not to go down in the first place.

I've only crashed on dirt, with dirt bikes being stupid. My best was a 30 yard superman into a ditchbank. I really hate sand burrs.
