Hey guys, so this is what I invested in with the money from the Radian. It has some issues, but it's so clean. 1977 Yamaha XS650.
Issues: (if anyone has ideas) *was told it had fresh oil. Drove it 80 miles home to discover it has almost nothing on the dipstick. *electric starter grinds and doesn't always start the bike. Kick start will only work on first try after using electric start. Thinking its the starter gears. *electrical issue with blinkers, brake and neutral light (all on same circuit) found the bad contact just need to rewire it up. So pretty much solved but thought i'd throw it out there. *****big issue is that when I go into first gear it shifts into the gear fine, but once i get to the very end of releasing the clutch it feels like it jumps out and then back into gear and will kill the bike if i don't give it gas. Sounds like a very quick grind. It's fine in every gear after that though. Any thoughts would help. Thanks

Can't tell about the oil. In 80 miles its either burning it which you're
probably gonna see at the tail pipe or by looking at the plugs. Start with a compression test. Or you're gonna see it leaking Out somewhere. Probably a pretty good size leak. Unless it's sneaking out past the seal on the output shaft then It's gonna be all over the chain guard etc. The starter issue sounds like your gonna have to pull off the right engine case cover and have a look inside The fact its effecting both the elect and the kick sounds like the main starting gear. Not the stater. You won't know Till you look inside. Nice bike, I've always wanted an XS for a project to either turn into an old school rigid bobber or a cafe racer. good luck. keep us posted and ad pics of its progress I love those things. PS. I hope that pic wasn't taken in it's "normal" parking spot. Looking at the ground I'd say I can see your oil problem. Last edited by Offday; 05-15-2012 at 02:01 AM. |

JP , hope you get it all sorted out quickly and have it road worthy soon. What are all those stains on the asphalt under your motorcycle? (Sniff-sniff) Hey, it is soy sauce! LOL!

the xs650 is a beautiful bike. the parallel twin is a very good lookin' motor to me.
they are beautiful restored and they also make a great platform for bobbers, cafe racers, and flat trackers. if i every run by one and the price is right, i'm gonna snatch me up one too.

Hey guys got an update. Figured out the electrical issue got it fixed. Figured out why it was jumping in first too. Worn teeth on the front sprocket. Also got the oil issue figured out with new oil in. The oil light sensor screw was loose and slowly leaking. All in all my only issue now is a perforated float in the carb that keeps sinking and flooding the carb to the point of overflow. Soldered it up twice now in 24 hours so I got new ones on the way. This will be a build bike if anyone cares to follow. I will be starting a new thread shortly
