Just thought i had to let some steam out so bare with me guys. I take my gas tank to a very well respected body shop to get a dent taken out of it and to get a fresh coat of paint. The tank was given to them on Friday and they said it would be ready by Wednesday, I remember thinking well that sound like a long time to get the job done on a small project like that but whatever.
So Wednesday rolls around and its about 5 o'clock so i call them and they say it will be ready Thursday. Thursday comes around and i once again have to call them and they say it will be ready noon on Friday. High noon on Friday i call them and they say it will be ready @ 4 O'clock. So i finally get down there pick up the tank take it home examine the tank, and it is crappy paint job at best. Dust particles are in the paint, there is spots that didn't look like they even been buffed out! Take it back to them on Saturday go back in to pick it up on that same day and there is chips in the paint still and even a minor scratch that was not even created by me. The lady who works there has the nerve to tell me that those scratches were in the paint. I say you mean the paint that u guys were suppose to re-do. Now im starting to get pissed i leave the tank with them tell them to re-paint it and have it ready for me on Monday. Its been almost a week and a half now and i just want to ride im going crazy. My question to all u guys is if i go back and the paint is still messed up what should i do ask a refund and just take the tank back or let them keep doing it until they get it right. Oh yeah i paid 225 to get the job done. Which for 225 there should be no imperfections in the tank at all. Let me know if I am over reacting!!! |

You aren't necessarily overreacting but you have (to me) unrealistic expectations.
I've been working on the paint on a tank for a month now. The paint takes time to dry. I can't imagine paint that's only 4 days old as being ready to be buffed out. My former stepdad was an auto painter and my son is a painter and both have told me that you should wait a minimum of 2 weeks before even considering buffing. I don't know about your body shop but $225 to remove a dent AND paint is dirt cheap compared to here. In printing (which translates to body and paint quite well) there is a saying You have 3 elements that you can have 1) Great quality 2) Great service (turnaround time) 3) Great price. PICK TWO! Sounds like you got a good price and good turnaround time...

Hopefully it will all turn out for you.
Yeah that paint wouldn't be ready to be color sanded and buffed for at least a week Probably two. Just gotta keep the faith they'll take care of it. If this part of it's got you pissed. Think how you'd feel if it had been everything you expected and more and a week after your put it on the bike you gotta nice little chip in it from a piece of road debris while riding. I saw that happen to my friends bike. And the paint on his tank alone was $700 He never got custom paint again. |

I stripped my tank, found a few small dents with filler in them, took the filler out and left the dents exposed then rattle can sprayed it, my bike is 20 years old so I look at the dents as battle scars..
It sounds to me that what you actually paid for was a tank repair and a blow over which in the 60s would have cost you $40 for a car..but you could stay in a motel for $5 in the 60s.. John.
