Carry a pocket full of milk bones. Drop a few as you leave and then save a few for when you ride home. He''ll be too bust munching on the milk bones to mess you.

We had a mailman who tried that strategy with our neighbors Irish Setter. It wasn't long before our neighbors had to let the dog out when the mail truck turned onto out street or she would have gone through the big front window. She'd then race up and down the street past the truck until she got her treat. I don't think it would be good to have the dog equate chasing the bike with getting treats.

That's what I was thinking of the suggestion. Rewarding negative behavior of would only encourage the behavior.

One thing I haven't seen in this thread is what we teach in MSF courses about when dogs chase you. Don't just gun it and speed up... slow down until he gets near you and then speed up. It throws his approach all off.

When the dog comes out around the house, he is all ready beside me. Slowing down only give him the chance to cut in front of me. Been there, done that. Damn near hit him. I still haven't talked to the owner yet. Didn't really have the opportunity. But definitely on the short list.

The remaining one still chases me on my bike and I've found if I just slam on brakes and stop, the dog peels off back onto my neighbors property. It's seems like it isn't as fun when something isn't running from them. It's aggravating and I've contemplated even buying one of those cheap bb pistols to lay down some less than lethal frontier justice. I live in the middle of nowhere so this may not be a good idea in a subdivision....maybe one of those canned air horns used in marine applications.
I thought about stopping and letting him come up and check the bike out, but he sounds like he wants to rip my tires off. Fraid if I stop, he just might do so.

I've got this supersonic thing that is silent to me, but my dog and cat hear it fine. And they HATE it. I use it for when they are doing something they shouldn't. It freaks them out. I try not to use it when the innocent bystander is around...

Get one, after a few days, he's probably going to stop following you.

Then use it to terrorize neighborhood dogs! J/k
