They might be shooting for a hole in the market. Sometimes consumers are ready for a class size that's right in the middle. If they can make it significantly cheaper for almost the same performance, it could be a winner.

Plus i would think they can get more than 45hp out of a 500cc twin when kawi is gettin 39 out of the ninja 300 dont get me wrong its a great lookin bike wonder y they didnt throw the 700 in it but thats y i dont build them they know more than me

I'm hoping that Honda was going to make a CB600R. That being a downsized version of the CB1000R. I think I would be a good fit for a upright sports bike. I just don't need 1000cc's of superbike engine to commute on the highways.
As been pointed out earlier in the thread, a CBR500(46hp), doesn't match up well with a Ninja 650 (64hp). I have strong feeling that Honda's 500 will be at least as expensive as a Ninja 650. |

IIRC Honda's new 500s are purpose built to fit new horsepower and weight restrictions in the UK and the world over. If I'm right any of the big 4 trying to fit the universal half liter market would have to be just as heavy and have similar power ratings.
Honda will probably price them down to compete, like with the NC700X. At least that's my hope.
