My 30 year old GL500 needed a few minutes. Like you said, it would die if it wasn't warmed up enough.
The Phantom, I give it a minute or two. I don't think it needs it though. It was 21 F for me this morning. One thing about thinking about it while at work... It's even worse if you take the cage. And even more so if the other bike riders at work ride theirs in. Sent from my iPhone using MO Free |

If the bike was sitting for any period of time before you got it... With the gas these days... Your lucky it runs at all... I would put a half can of seafoam in it ASAP than run that out and put the other half in when you fill it up... I would stay with the seafoam for at least two cans to see if it cleans up those carbs...it sounds like your carbs are dirty...Good Luck

From my understanding, the engines are designed to warm up partially by driving (air cooled systems at least) to distribute the engine heat evenly.
I have an 84 and It appears to warm up best if I let it run for 2-5 minutes, then get on and ride it easy for a few miles. after about 10 mins on the road, you can tell the difference when you open the throttle - goes from sputtering and choking to roaring like that engine should |

Grape Ape - that second link told me everything I needed to know. Thanks. I tried the no choke and then 3/4 choke this morning. It started great and after I got everything on and backed it down my drive it ran perfect. Thanks
Shadowseeker - sweet name! This morning I left about 20 minutes early and took the really really long was to work. It was fun but I certainly figured out that I need winter gloves. the 30 degree air blows right through these. Fat Daddy - yeah that wouldn't work for my bike at all. I wonder if the hines exhaust and the bigger jets make any difference? MOFO YO - maybe I can get mine to do that at some point. That would be nice. tmoldovan - at least I live close enough to work that I could go home on my lunch break and grab the bike. rb608 - I am sure I will get to that point as well. For now it is just a toy maybe someday it will be more of a means of transportation finjoey - oh I pulled the carbs twice and completely cleaned and used a kit the second time. Then I discovered the issue I was having was the battery so no need to seafoam or carb cleaning yet. proto - Never really thought about it like that. I kind of feel like I am doing something wrong if I start to go and it isn't warmed up yet. Guess I need to change the way I am thinking. jpr1968 - this morning I did and it worked great. i know it took me 3 tryed to get it installed back in the carbs right. So I hope it is good. kacealraid - that is good to know. I guess I am thinking that since this bike looks bascially new it should act perfect. I guess perfect for a carb bike is still sluggish for the first mile or so.
