Hello guys,
I just bought a 98' VT600CD that I found around in a repair shop, I got it for a great price and is now in a general maintenance in order to get it sharp and ready to run. As its normal on hibernating bikes, it have some rust and chips in the paint (Absence of love) so I am going to remove the rust and polish all parts and paint it all over. I like a lot like the matte black color looks on this bike (Tank, fenders and even the engine fully black) but on the other side a shiny black and a chrome engine also looks nice which is the stock look. Any of you guys have this bike in the matte black color and can post it on? On the other hand, what are the cons of painting the engine fully black? Thanks a bunch in advance for your help!!! |

I have some mate black parts on mine and, because it doesn't have a protective clear coat, it chips pretty easily. When I painted cars, the heavy layers of black filler primer were chip resistant. I haven't found a great flat black for bikes yet, though the duplicolor low-gloss engine paint is the most beautiful I've ever seen.

It's been torn down for the last 3 weeks while I painted, chopped, and otherwise altered it. It's nearly finished and in a couple days I'll have it back together and post up pics.
One thing I did was to flat black a lot of parts and throw a few coats of clear on the parts that are exposed to the most damage/dirt (forks, trees). That actually creates a cool level of depth and texture vs all-flat. Oh, and one tip, when the flat parts get scuffed, you can sand them with 1000 to 1500 grit paper to smooth it back out. |

i was going to go as well with the matte black theme on my bike. but i just seen way to many people do it. also i had got my bike with the previous owner rattle canned everything. it looks really good further away but up close theres alot of paint chipping. one thing i would suggest is if you havnt already done so. please make sure whatever parts you painted. you sand, sand, sand, primer, sand, then paint. previous owner did not sand nor prime anything. so its all chipping off. good luck on your bike.
