Thanks for all the good advice. I am going to stick with something with a good reputation, especially for my kids helmets. Being active duty military, I have to wear a helmet whether or not the state has a helmet law.

I started with an Icon full face from the PX. After one summer of feeling like my head was the main entree in a TV dinner, I bought a Shoei Multitech.
World Of Difference, my friend! The Shoei is the most comfortable helmet I have ever worn! After another summer of riding with the face flipped open, I bought a Scorpion EXO-100 half helmet. Now I use the Shoei when it is cooler/cold out and the Scorpion when it is warm/hot. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Motorcycle.com Free App |

I wear an Arai Profile helmet. This is mainly for the fit. I have a "long oval" head shape so there aren't many helmets out there that fit that head shape correctly. Proper fit is the most important thing... I don't recommend buying a helmet without trying it on. To protect you correctly it must fit properly.
Having said that... Arai is pretty pricey. Very nice but pricey. I have 2 Scorpion helmets my wife and kids use and I must say they are very decent for the price. Good bang for the buck. I see no reason why they wouldn't protect a head as well as an Arai. Of course, no pinlock, paint job isn't as nice... bla bla bla... but a decent value. Try a Scorpion. I have an old HJC that someone gave me... seems decent as well but it doesn't fit me. Good luck!

I look at it this way, most helmets are made of the same materials, all of them will do a good job if you hit the ground and then your head smacks back on the ground, and even if you are wearing the best and hit a brick wall head on you are probably going to break your neck..Buy what you can afford..it will be a lot better than nothing..

Question for you, would you let your 13 year old ride with you wearing that helmet? I ask because my daughter really likes one of them but I am a little hesitant to buy her a helmet that I can't put my hands on first.
why not?? they are DOT. the protection is there. they run small so measure around her head then follow the size guide on leather up. most important of course is to ride safely... have fun. |

I purchased a Scorpion EXO half helmet from my local Honda dealer. I checked online prices and got just as good a deal from the local dealer. I really liked the fact I could try on several helmets before making the purchase. (Bell, HJC, Gmax and Scorpion) The Scorpion fit my fat head the best. It is flat black and has a flip down sun visor.

Buy the best helmet you can afford. I went down the track about 75 yards head first on my back a few years ago wearing a Shoei. I could feel the bumping of my head on the asphalt but couldn't believe the sheer amount of damage that was caused to the helmet. Without that lid I have no doubt that my brain would have been exposed to the elements. I saw a guy one time that had his his entire lower jaw ground off with a head first launch into the ground. There is a case for wearing a full face helmet. Did you ever wonder why racers wear them ?
