You know, it just occured to me (and I only bring it up for the sake of argument...).
I've been a member of the PGR for a long time, thru quite a few winters. When a family invites the Patriot Guard to stand for a loved one, they sorta expect to see us in full leather. Not that it really matters and not that all PGR wear leather, but most do and it's kinda become our symbol. Other than the American flag and the yellow triangle flag with blue stars, of course. There have been many missions in the winter when it's not really safe to ride a motorcycle in a foot of snow (though I have seen more than one rider do it) yet without fail, in a foot of snow with wind chills in the single digits you'll see a bunch of riders standing out in this weather dressed in leather chaps/vests/coats trying hard not to look too uncomfortable. I've seen riders who didn't ride, because of wounds/injuries/health/etc, wear full leather to a mission when the weather was perfect and 60 degrees. I've seen men/women who never have been on a motorcycle in their life attend missions wearing a leather vest full of patches/pins. Does what they were wearing/not riding make any of these people, posers? I really don't care one way or another, and I can say with no doubt at all that the families we stand for don't care either. We show up and that is what matters.

After a 3 hr ride in 48-50 degrees to a VA appt back midmonth I was in my hi-viz jacket on my Shadow and as I was walking off from the motorcycle parking area I saw a guy come in on a nice Harley with the leather skull cap and HD Jacket (it had seen some miles). We ended up at labs together and chatted a little. When I said something about just being on my little ole 750 Shadow this bad old Harley guy says to me, "Hey, Shadows are nice bikes." Just got in from a 2.5 hr ride back from up near SA and dang, if I didn't end up exchanging waves with a couple of guys on Harleys. No waiting to see who would wave first, just a "Hey Brother!" Heck for our little gathering for Toys for Tots, where we went to support the Gypsies who were sponsoring the event, there were only three of us on bikes and I was in my bright jacket and FF helmet just because it was warmer. Granted the SCRC is mostly populated by older guys and couples who have been riding a long time and aren't up for every day riding. They still get out and run some miles on a group ride, but don't think because they go creaking out of cages in vests and do rags they haven't done their time on two wheels. That said, I too would take it a bit poser if a guy in leathers was hanging out doing photo "posing" with other people's bikes as if they were their own.

Is it possible that Officer Friendly was just feeling a little cranky after riding in sub-freezing temps and watching someone who didn't freeze their hind quarters off standing around his bike pretending? Right, wrong, indifferent...I know I would never get cranky about such a thing. Honest...okay, not so honest...

Just ride your Friggin bike and stop judging others for what they wear or what they don't wear. What they ride what they don't ride. When they ride or when they don't ride What they tow, When they tow, What they fix or pay to have fixed. All revolving around who is the "real biker" anxiety. I have never seen a more judgmental bunch then "bikers" who go through great lengths in their yearning to be identified as such. No where is this more prevalent then with those who ride Harleys and the myriad of bikes inspired by Harley's design in the 90's and the carefully cultivated "ride from the outside in" lifestyle and "image".
