Ya know, I'm usually a nice, cooperative, "can't we all get along" kinda guy. Yeah, I ride aggressively; but I'm not a jerk about it. If folks put on a turn signal, I'll wave 'em on over in front of me. It's a motorcycle, not my penis.
There's one spot near the end of my commute where everybody knows the lane is going to end. Most cars using the right lane are right turners for the superslab entrances or a business park, but if there's a long line of cars in the left (thru) lane, I'll run the right lane. With the bike's size and acceleration, merging left is a non-issue. But this morning was different. I'm in no hurry. I'm the second car in the left lane at the last light before the merge. I notice a shiny new Honda CRV in the right lane just ahead of me. Looked like right off the showroom floor. So the light changes, and this lady almost immediately comes on over. I mean, she had to know I was there, we were next to each other at the light. Turn signal? Of course not. I mean, she was coming into the space that I already occupied, expecting, I suppose, that I'd just back off. I'm not that nice. I still had half a lane, so I shot up beside her and gave her a rather emphatic gesture as to my displeasure. She got the message. I mean...WTF people? I can understand not being seen, but that's not what happened. This lady is lucky she doesn't have a size 10.5 bootprint on her nice new car. (Just for the safety-minded...I did have an "out" and plenty of room to stay out of her way or avoid her if necessary. I'm crazy, but not stoopid.)

Ha. Actually, I wasn't even expecting much response. There is a wide disparity of experience here. Some should and would do what I did. More, I suspect should take a more safety-oriented approach and keep both hands on the handlebars; and that's probably the better general advice. Then again, I wasn't really giving advice, just offering an anecdote.

I've had this happen many a times. Anticipate stupidity and you'll never be surprised doesn't mean they don't get a "WTF" look.

If I were offered the ""out" and plenty of room to stay out of her way or avoid her if necessary", I would have chose that rather than enter a situation with potentially deadly consequences by wanting to stand my ground. Afterall, bike vs. SUV ... I don't think that needs much thought. It's all up for speculation afterwards anyway, but glad you avoided any incident. Good luck with the replies though.

So instead of taking the out you had you insisted on crownding the idiot in a cage. Fact is you are on the bike you saw her, knew what she was going to do. Fact is also that even if you were parked directly infront of her she likely would not have "SEEN" you. having NOT seen you how is she supposed to know what you are jesturing about. All she saw was the light and the fact that her lane was ending. All you saw was the typical cager trying to cut off the biker. Even though that biker has an OUT is therfore can't be cut-off. Being aggressive is one thing, being a bully another.

I've done it... Why? Cause I was pissed.... The first sign that I was losing control, and that my friend is the error. Then I think to myself... Yeah like I was going to throw done on a woman!? Plus, at my age (61) I shouldn't even consider throwing down on a guy!! O, wait... I shouldn't' ever be thinking about throwing down with anyone!!! But thinking it through when pulsing with adrenaline is not always possible/ probable. Give yourself a break, tell yourself it wasn't personal just another busy person trying to negotiate life. LiVE and let live.
