Default Do you test yourself in your cage?

Meaning, do you watch hard and close for how hard motorcycles are supposed to be so hard to see?
I don't think I have ever not noticed one and find myself wondering if they silently "thank me" when I waited that extra 20 seconds for them to pass instead of turning in front of them or any other number of situations.
I have gone so far as to salute a driver or two if I saw that they were looking at me to say thanks for sparing my life.
This morning, I saw a bundled up biker as he turned the corner with 2-3 other cars and was in a left turn lane and despite their all being no less than 50 feet away, I just sat there staring at how the bikes headlights blended in with the cages and thought "wow, we really can be invisible!"

Before I rode, I was always extremely respectful to and aware of riders. And, made sure anyone driving a car I was in did the same. I think I've always been mindful because, as a kid, I heard the horror stories about the accidents my uncles had been in on their bikes.

I think i've always been very aggressive at knowing what is around me, what is approaching me, and what has passed me. The only times i've lost sight of (or never saw in the first place) was bikers who lane split at higher rates of speed than traffic. In general i am probably more alert and observant than others. However, knowing even i don't see bikes lane splitting at higher rates of speed than traffic justifies even more so in my mind not to do that.

You can't stop an adrenaline junkie. You can only watch them and wait for their crowning moment.

I've said this many times before that I think a prerequisite for obtaining a driver's license is to first spend some time on a motorcycle/scooter on public roads. An individual would then become more aware by their own experience. We here as riders I think take on more of that awareness when we're behind the wheel of a car. I know I do.

I think as riders ourselves we are already more aware. Before it would take me a longtime to pick the sound of a bike out in the distance. Now I can hear them almost immediately and I stand firmly in the camp that loud pipes make you more visible. I usually hear them which makes me look for them.

I learned at a very early age cars don't see people on two wheels.......I think it was about 11 year old on a Sting Ray bicycle. Anyone whop has spent their youth riding bicycles to and from schools and running errands know well before they get a driver's licence they cannot be seen. Drivers seem to forget that because they are conditioned to look for large things that can hurt them when learning to drive. Motorcycles and bicycles don't fit in that category.

When I did my msf course, I got a decal that reads - "watch for the motorcycles". I have it on my rear windshield. That reminds me everyday that I have to be mindful when I am driving.

So far, for about 2 months that I have been riding, I have had more good experiences with drivers than bad ones. I should mention though that my riding has only been on back roads. I have still venture on riding on GSP AND NJ Turnpike.
