Default When parking your bike...

Make sure there will be enough "lean" after throwing the kickstand down especially in high wind conditions.
Rode to a grave site anniversary memorial yesterday with a group of riders and as we all lined up and were putting kickstands down, I wasn't comfortable with the gravel and dirt combination leaving my bike nearly straight up so I finagled it until I was more comfortable with it. Unfortunately, the Honda rider behind me didn't do the same thing and there it went!

Yup. Same for parking on hilly streets. If it doesn't lean enough, I find another spot.

I've been in San Francisco for 6 days and it is amazing to me the number of bikes parked on really steep hills, kickstands on the low side and not angled but 90 degrees to the curb. I'm surprised they don't fall over

I keep a small piece of aluminum diamond plate in my saddlebag for that. 1/2" plywood would work too.

I think you are talking about different things..the original poster seems to be saying don't leave the bike too straight because the wind can blow it over..and you are saying if you lean it on a soft surface it can sink into the ground and fall over..Both apply..

John.

My hat is definitely off to SF riders. With the car traffic (often out-of-towners completely confused by the warren of one-way streets), street cars and trolleys with minds of their own, train tracks running along or across so many streets, and the fact that there is seemingly NO FLAT GROUND anywhere -- you have to have some skills to regularly ride there.

And I'm not even talking about the cold morning fog.
