Styrofoam like what's used in cups is chemically similar but not identical and not designed for 30mph impact resistance. I'm not really giving my opinion on the matter. I'm relaying what I've been told by people that make helmets for a living, people who's job it is to ensure the safety of riders on the street, and people who's job it is to ensure the safety of riders on the track.

You can say those engineers missed something you didn't. You can say their studies were flawed. You can't say that people who don't sell helmets are only saying this to sell more helmets. I can assure you that it's not just to sell more helmets.

It's your head so do what you want, but I'm not really understanding why you so easily dismiss the findings of these groups. It seems borderline reckless to ignore the above organizations and their recommendations when telling people they don't need to worry about replacing their safety gear because that's like, your opinion man.

Bottom line: You only find out your helmet wasn't good enough when you need it most. $50-300 every 4-5 years is the cheapest insurance I've ever heard of. That's my opinion...

Really? Perhaps you'd share the chemical composition of the various Polystyrene blends that you are privy to, and whom you were told this by? The people whose job it is to make helmets are in business to make money, first and foremost. They don't do that by selling each rider only one helmet.

I haven't said hat builders missed something. I say they are misrepresenting something. I say they are playing CYA for profit. I can say that they are doing it just to sell more helmets. I may be wrong, but I can say it as my opinion. You can say that I'm wrong as your opinion, but you cannot assure me of it.

Reckless? Get real. I haven't told anyone what to do. I have offered what I do, and why. I can understand your confusion, what with confusing your own opinion with facts you can assure us of.

Nothing is cheap if it's not necessary. But I do respect your opinion.

I have two full face helmets and an open face too.

Both the full face helmets are Shoei. Maximum safety.

I wear the cafe racer style AGV helmet to achieve a certain look when I'm on my Triumph.

Sometimes in a head wind I have problems with the helmet pressing against my nose and sometimes in heavy rain and wind I get water running down the inside and the outside of my visor..This cuts the visibility down a lot, however if I am wearing an open helmet with a visor I can feel the rain hitting my lower face with such force it feels like needles piercing my skin..so even if the law allowed me to ride without a helmet I probably would still wear one on long trips.

It is a fact that they're not saying this to sell more helmets because they don't sell them. There may be other reasons that make their findings false, but boosting helmet sales can't be one of them.

This is the one I use:

scorpion exo 1100. Full-face, inflatable airbags on the inside, has a secondary inner lens that is tinted, very comfortable to wear. Also has quite a few adjustable air vents for riding in warmer weather.

downside: It's a bit pricey (ranges around 300 bucks) but it's a very nice full fiberglass helmet. also comes in quite a bit of colors and varieties.

I've tested this in a 45MPH spill, I approve

John.
If your helmet moves on your head, that is an indication that it is too small. You should be able to move joke head quickly from side to side (like shaking your head to indicate "no") without your helmet shifting.

My previous helmet also shifted and pressed on my nose at high speeds and leaked water and wind through the visor like yours.

My solution was to buy a new helmet. No more shifting and no more leaks. In fact or fogs up less too. Now I can focus on my ride instead of being distracted by my helmet!

I don't wear a helmet but...I have one with me to put on quickly when I see I'm going to crash.

Full Face. Without it I would have died on Sept 28, 2012.
