The above helmet arguement has 2 sides and no answer. I'm guessing the snell/dot 5 year recomendation is for the average-extreme helmet use. It's a gray area. The 5 year recomendation makes no mention of the Menhir situation where he bought a new helmet already 5 years old. Again no answer, but I'd use common sence in these situations or call snell/dot for their expert opinion and go accordingly if you can even trust that there is no influance from big money on these companies. Oh oh oh, the question, I use 3/4+ face shield.

A while back I was writing a piece on helmet laws for RoadRUNNER Magazine (my employer) during my research I found that (if this information is correct) less than 4% of head impacts from motorcycle wrecks occur on the small area protected by a half helmet, which means that 96% of the time wearing a half-helmet is now better than wearing no helmet at all. And as far as 3/4 helmets go, I like my face too much to risk having it ground off. For me it's full-face or modular no matter how hot it is. I think most people who wear half or 3/4 helmets do so for looks more than anything else, the whole claustrophobia thing is a bit ridiculous.

Phobias by their very name are irrational and ridiculous
I haven't ever had a helmet make me feel extra to get hot or stuffy. In fact keeping the hot sun off my face and head is honestly more comfortable than without. |

My first motorcycle helmet was a HJC full face. It was done with service on July 3, this year. Now, I have a KBC Stealth modular helmet.

I was wearing a modular Bluetooth helmet when riding by myself.
I managed to get the girl friend to get on the bike she found she loved it. Bought 3/4 with face shield so we could talk. Bought the sena bluetooth smh10 near the end of summer. Love it. Will be buying modular with built in sun-shield.

Believe me, I would love to wear a FF helmet for safety reasons as you mentioned in your post. But, I have tried numerous times to put on a FF helmet, and every single time I do, I get all weirded out. I love my HJC AC-3 open face helmet. It is DOT and Snell approved and is an awesome helmet! I have two different ratcheting face shield for it too. When summertime comes around and it feels like it's 117° in the shade, I'll take off the face shield and put on the stock sun visor and wear sunglasses. I know I'm taking a huge chance with my face should I wipe out, but it's my choice.
