Yep. I'm for a standard ride position next go round. Actually, the Versys with the V-Strom as a second choice, was what I originally went in for. The Ninja 650 was also on the list ahead of the cruisers with the idea of making it a short range sport tourer. Ultimately it came down to the issue of the Versys/V-Strom, and similar bikes just being too darn tall.

After a few cramps in the sides of the thighs and hips trying to "swing a leg" the Shadow picked me. Actually there was a used VTX 1300 at the dealership that really felt excellent, but the miles were little high and I was going for a new bike with full warranty.

I'm hoping the resurgence of modernized nostalgia bikes that fit the UJM pattern will take off and hold well. Now if BMW would follow suit with bikes like Triumph with their Bonneville and Honda with their CB1100 and come out with something like to the old R Series that would be a bike I'd love to have. I never had one, but I always loved the look of the old BMW.

Imagine something like this with modern fuel injection and disc brakes all around:

I'm very happy with my VLX, and I probably won't get rid of it until I have too. I'd certainly consider replacing it with another Honda because of the reliability. Also, I like to tour, and no matter where I go there always seems to be a Honda dealer nearby.

But I have no interest in big, heavy bikes, even for touring.

There are two other bikes that I would also consider.

1) A Harley Davidson Sportster. An 884 or maybe the SuperLow.

2) A Triumph Bonneville. It's not a cruiser, but there's something about the Bonneville that makes me sigh like a lovesick teenage girl.

I've always wanted to give a motard like that a run. They're such goofy looking bikes but I dunno... something about them speaks to me. Maybe just the fact they're so nontraditional looking.

I wouldn't mind giving one of those a shot, looks like a blast. I live in area with a somewhat limited selection of bikes and would either have to travel to Albq. or Dallas for a Ducati. For my one up riding pleasure, this C14 has been quite suitable.

Be sure to take all three of them for a test ride, about the only thing they all have in common is they are V-Twins. I've been on the Kawi and Rodie and the two ride and handle very differently. If possible try all 3 at a Bike Week or on the same day if available.

Amos,
Don't give up on Bonnevilles. The new ones are reliable and a blast to ride. Do you have a Triumph dealership near Del Rio?

Don't worry. I too have a sweet spot for the new Bonnies. I almost went that way when I got the Shadow. Pretty much if I'd gone to the Triumph/BMW dealer near SA first and gotten financed I'd be on a Bonneville now instead of the Shadow. As it was I went to the metric dealer first and it all just sort of worked out the way it did. If I could have a small stable of bikes a Bonnie would be one of them.

It would look something like this:

Well, you said you like to tour, so a Sportster is likely not a good choice for a few reasons: (1) not very comfortable for distance riding; (2) even though it's rubber mounted, there is still some significant vibration over time; (3) limited seating position--see (1); finally, the 883 doesn't have much power--it's similar to a 750, but not really good for touring.
Of course, YMMV.
