Didn't read all 6 pages of this thread. I live in So Cal and the only way to get from point a to point b at rush hour or on the weekends up the coast is to "Lane Share" ( motorcycle is allowed to share the lane with another vehicle). When the traffic if moving above 40mph I pull back into the lane. When it slows below that I "lane share" but not more than 10 mph faster than the movement of the traffic. And by the way, someone wrote earlier about getting the same respect by acting like a car and stay in your lane, or something like that - simply not the case in Los Angeles. If you lane share between the fast and #2 lane, you will find MANY cages will give you extra room to get by - I, and most cyclists give an OBVIOUS wave to that cage to thank them but also to indicate to other cages that someone just did something nice for me and I will thank you too if you give me extra room. Word to the wise- everyone should "split" - there I said it- down the same lane or by bad coincidence a cage will give me extra room between 1 and 2 and you get HIT splitting between 2 and 3 - bad.
The major thing to watch for is specifically a space between cages in front of you. That is the danger spot where a cage might change lanes. Otherwise in slow bumper to bumper traffic you have your own lane- but have hands and feet touching the brakes, just in case- it does happen - some sneezes or is an A$$ () ! They are out there thinking if I have to wait in line so do you- doesn't happen often, but should be cautious. I wouldn't do it in any other state as they are not expecting it.

It's legal here in Texas and when traffic is stopped, I do it.

Was a motorcycle messenger in San Francisco in the early 90's. lane splitting the Bay Area freeways from sac to San Jose was the job. Got crazy but I got good at it. A total adrenaline rush. I lived in the lane that isn't there. Got to the front of city traffic at stops. Got to the next town whiles cages were sitting. But it was the adrenaline rush! Nw I'm in New Mexico with no need to split lanes. Land of maņana. When people talk about traffic here I just smile. I really don't miss the insanity of Bay Area roads. But when I go back to ca. I fall right back into adrenaline heaven.
Be safe. |

I live and work in LA. I only lane split when traffic is near stopped. I must say that many, many California drivers will pull out of your way, giving you more room.
It is all about risk, and focus. If i am at all unfocused i sit my happy ass in traffic. Sent from my iPhone using Motorcycle.com Free App |

To those who say they would never do it, i wouldn't be so sure. It is legal here and i never do it when traffic is moving. However, when traffic is stopped or going 5mph believe me it is the best thing in the world. I figure i'm not going fast enough to get hurt should someone cut me off. I am extremely careful when i do as well. I first thought no way but quickly learned it is a MAJOR advantage of being on a bike in traffic. What i don't get is those who do it when traffic is moving at regular speeds. That to me is insane as all a person has to do is drift over and barely nick the bike and its all over for the rider.

Some riders do it here but it's dangerous as it's not legal and some drivers will swerve AT you because they're pissed you're moving and they're not. Gaining time isn't worth my life so I sit in traffic with the rest of the chumps.
