He had a stroke yesterday, had to put him to sleep

So sorry for your loss. I have had two dogs live to eighteen years old before I had to put them down. I understand the bond.

I was just telling my son about Duke less than five minutes ago...I am so sorry for your loss. We had to put our Penny to sleep this past summer at 13 years and it still hurts.
