I have been at this decision point now for about 2 years. I have made up, unmade and changed my mind about twenty dozen times. During this time the models I have been considering have changed and improved.
What am I talking about ?? An Action Camera. I had the field narrowed to two. The Drift and the GoPro. Each has upgraded 2 times during my research and decision period. The current models are the Drift Ghost and the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. ![]() I have always leaned a little to the Drift. Mainly because of it's shape and how it can be mounted. I just don't think I can bring myself to have that square brick mounted on top of my head making me look like and overly mature "tele tubby". The Drift is a much more sleek and aerodynamic design. Another reason is the remote control that comes with the Drift and is an extra purchase with the GoPro. Also the lens rotates on the Drift to give you much more flexibility in mounting angles. The video and Pics the two cameras take is astounding really. I have wanted an action cam ever since the wife and I had our riding vacation in the Hill Country of Texas a couple of years ago. I missed so many great pictures because they were there and then gone before I could stop and get a camera out and shoot the picture or there was no place to stop and get a pic. With the still pics the Drift will take ( 11 megapixel ) by using the remote that will be eliminated. You can turn your head toward your shot and take still pics while the video is running or just have the camera set to take pictures one at a time or in burst mode and get several with the press of a button. I would really give a lot to have some video of the wife as she rode Highway 16, that would be priceless. These cameras just seem way to opportune not give it a try. So Christmas money committed. Has anyone out there had experience with these cameras ? I can use some help being steered one way or the other. This is a near $500.00 investment so I would like to get it right the first time ....

I like the size of the Drift. Been looking at these myself but I cannot find a reason to own one except that I am a tech gadget freak. I don't do anything that I see these things used for at their best. taking videos of my rides is something I don't understand as I am enjoying that in real time. cannot imaging watching them on the big screen without the noise and wind. LOL
Maybe as a"witness" or "flight recorder" but i don't intend on needing that either. crasht forensics are pretty good nowadays.

I'm the type to pull over and take a pic.
Or just remember the sunset while running ahead of the rain. I've discovered that a photograph that really captures the moment takes a lot of planning. Otherwise it's just a "meh" picture that takes 5 minutes of explaining how great it was. Sent from my Motorcycle iPad app |

I know it can be a tough choice. I was fortunate enough that my wonderful wife bought me one of the earlier versions of the drift a few years back. It's the Drift x170, now I know it's not HD but I will tell you, that Drift x170 has taken more videos of our riding her in Big Sky Country Montana. I have taken it up on the mountain snowboarding, elk hunting, and even had it on tubing behind our boat. The bottom line is, it is an awesome video camera. My comparison is with the GoPro as that is what my son has, it does take nice videos also....but.....it seems like he either runs out of battery at the worst time or he has bought so much stuff to just mount the GoPro. My Drift x170 came with everything I needed, and it even had a remote and have yet to change the battery in it. This is just my two cents worth! I can tell you this, either camera will provide you with many years of wonderful memories!

I recently picked up a GoPro - but it was a hero 2 model. Was not enough difference to me to go with the hero 3. Because some of the 2's are available I picked up a motorsport edition with the wireless backpack for $218.
You can control it with your smartphone and the remote. pretty sweet setup for the price. |
