Aside from the usual lawyerly caution over liability issues and the eagerness of the marketing department to sell you a new helmet, I wonder if there is any real basis for the five-year recommendation. The only way to test the theory is to put a five-year-old helmet through the same tests as a new one of the same model and see how it fares.
Well I'll volunteer my 10.5-year-old Shoei RF-9000 for testing if someone wants to fund it. The helmet was never dropped or dinged and has been living comfortably somewhere in my basement for the last 5.5 years.

FWIW, I'm getting a new helmet next month -- I replace them every 5 years and hope to never have reason to do it sooner.

When you turn it up to put it on and the foam falls out in small dry rotted flakes, that when you know it's time for a new one.

If you never crashed with it, or dropped it and a semi ran over it, it is still a fine protective lid.

The owners manuals are written by lawyers trying to avoid any and all lawsuits, NOT by tech people who know just how bomb proof their products are.

Really, helmets will last much longer than you can imagine. As long as you haven't smashed it with a sledgehammer or the foam is falling out, it's still good.

Once you have regurgitated inside your helmet it is a good idea to replace it no matter how old it is.

Nope I mastered the one handed helmet removal lift while riding two years ago in Mobile Alabama after catching the Flue from Gonzo's brother in Dallas. Just figured it was important to point out this to the forum so as they realize there is more to a helmet than age and shell condition.

Glad it found a good home, don't think it like being in that box all the time.
