Question Oil Change!!

I just bought a 1990 Honda Shadow 1100!!!! I'm super excited to get to riding, but i want to make sure all the fluids are in good shape first. Of course it did not come with an owners manual or a service manual, although I have ordered them online, I am getting quite ancy!!! So I thought I might be able to get some answers here about the type of oil, filter, etc., I should use. And any other tips on maintenance would be greatly appreciated!!

Rotella 15w40 and a super tech 7317. This is what I and a lot of people on here use. Get it at Wal-mart for cheap. This is great oil and I have done a lot of research and found the super tech line of filters to be be one of the best you can get. They have all the same essentials of the OEM filters and a better media too....If I didn't believe in these, I would not use them my self...

Hello and welcome to the site.
Oil 10w40 of your choice, there is a number on the filter with that you can once again match it to your choice.
Be sure to check tires for condition and wear...make sure you have proper air pressure.
If it is shaft drive don't forget the 80/90 oil at the back wheel.
Chain? check for wear and smoothness as you spin the rear tire, 3/4 inch of play is sufficient.
Coolant do not over fill! if you do you will notice a leak when you park it lol

Check the oil sticky and make sure that you DON'T use "Energy Conserving" oil. It will screw up your clutch.

I personally would not use 15w-40. Spoke to 2 techs at the Honda dealer that had several 1100 have major problems using 15w-40. I don't remember the specifics but they ended up replacing the engine in both cases. Personally I usually run Lucas semi synthetic. and a super tech filter.
