Hi all,
I am new to this site so not sure of my way around yet. I have a 1996 Honda Shadow VT1100c with a carb issue. It's been sitting for awhile so after changing, the oil plugs, giving it new fuel and so on I'm not sure what to do next. When I start it I get a massive flow of fuel out the drain tube from the carbs. Is this a jet issue? I ran some Seafoam thru it and that helped some but I'm thinking I need to pull the carbs and do a good cleaning. I don't have much experience with this at all so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Tap the bowls with screwdriver handle - probably a stuck float. Once the idle jet is gummed up it can be pretty tough to get cleaned out with fuel cleaner.
If you are so inclined check out the Jetology sticky at the top of this forum - you will find some very detailed (w/pictures) instructions on how to pull and open the carbs (for rejetting) but really other than removing and cleaning the pilot/idle jet you will get a good look at entire carb dissassembly process. Not terribly complicated no special tools just good quality screw drivers and a few other minor tool. |

Welcome aboard Tigger!
You should first get a shop manual and tear into those carbs with some kind of knowledge first. Do it right the first time and not work by guessing. There are float issues that need to be addressed, among other things that keep the bike running right and things you need to know along the way. Removing the carbs is another issue and you will need to know just how/what to do so you don't lose small parts (springs, etc.) thru the removal process. It's time consuming, but not that bad if you take your time and follow the correct procedures. Keep us posted on your progress.
