I have another issue that has raised itself in my rebuild. The sub gear on the primary output gear broke taking the impulse generator out with it.
So began my search for parts. It appears there are no pulse generator pickup coil assemblies anywhere for sale right now! Does anyone know of where to find one? Or maybe a replacement part? I have been told the part for an 87 will fit, but the wiring plugs on the end are different and will need the old plugs soldered on. Also, the 85 VF1100 sabre pickup coils look very similar. Is there a way to use the pickup and make it work in place of what I have? I have found a few other pickup coils on E-bay for different bikes that look similar, wondering if it is possible to find one that has the same pickup, but different wiring and solder the new pickup to my wiring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

OK, I got the pulse generator back to working condition almost. I was able to dig out the busted wire. It broke off right at the housing on the pickup coil. I dremmeled down to expose a little bit of the wire, put the ohms meter to it and it tested good. So, I used a magnifying glass and tweezers and soldered the wire back together.
Now the question has come up what to use to cover the wires? Anyone have any ideas on what to use? I was thinking of getting some of that rubber coating dip like you would use for pliers handles. Not sure what else would work. JB weld I am affraid would conduct electrical current and short the wire out. RTV Ultra Black will probably not hold up in the heat and oil that it will be sitting in. Electrical tape won't hold up to the oil. Any ideas on what can be used? I must cover 1/16 inch of exposed wire. |

RTV is not oil-resistance enough to be in a crankcase. Your'e right that under certain circumstances, JB Weld does conduct.
If this was me, I'll tell you what I would do. Put a little RTV around the electrical connections. A very small amount, the amount you would apply with the point of a toothpick, just to insulate the electrical parts. Once that's set (give it 48 hours, just to be dang sure.) Encapsulate the thing in JB Weld for strength. JB Weld will have no trouble handling the environment inside the crankcase, and any electrical concerns will be addressed by the RTV. --Justin

I am also going to try to post a picture of it on the engine. It is outlined in red. I also need to find the gear shown in purple. For some reason the sub gear broke on the primary drive gear, the gear that bolts onto the crank shaft. ![]() ![]() Let me know if these pictures helped describe what I am working with. |

If you have the part, let me know what you would want for it, and what shipping would cost and see from there.
I have been searching E-bay, calling bike salvage yards, and a few other places but have had no luck. I couple of bike scrap yards have my number, they still might come up with something, but nothing yet. |

Great, I think the 92 parts are a little easier to find! I do have one scrap yard looking at their inventory to see if they have anything. If not, I will still be in the market for one!
I did get mine soldered back together, and found some heat shrink plastic that I wrapped the bare wires in. I am going to put it back together with that for now so I can finish some other projects I am working on with the bike. I want to run it in the shop for 30 minutes or so to aid in breaking it in before I hit the road, and need to do some carb adjustments. But even if it runs with this set I am going to try to get it replaced before I get it out on the road. Thanks for the help! |

OOps, nevermind, I forgot about the broken sub gear. Have to get that taken care of first. A bike mechanic claimed it can be run without the sub gear, but it will make a ticking noise. I am not sure if I want to try that, so probably be down until I get a gear found. I still might remove the sub gear and run it that way to see what happens, not sure yet.
