My manual recommends 10w-40... however, all the mechanics i talk to say to use 20w-50. my 750 takes about 2 1/2 quarts. I buy my oil and filters at Advanced Auto... but i hear some walmarts sell it too. MAKE SURE it is JASO MA rated for motorcycles (specifically designed for wet clutches).

PM me your email address and I'll send you the Honda Service Manual. It's for a 1998 VLX bike, but I used it for my 2001 with no major issues. The manual is 145 MB, so make sure that your email can receive a file that large.

Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference

That's a good reference on oil filters that you can use.

I've been using WalMart Supertech filters for years and years on cars and bikes, and have never had an oil related problem.

Lots of research has been done by people way smarter than me, and almost all show the SuperTech filters to be excellent quality and filtration. The low price is an added bonus!

The only difference between the ST6607 and ST7137 is the length. Either will fit on your VLX.
