i generally use 89 octane, just to play it safe. for an extra 30 cents a tank, a pretty cheap investment.

The use of any gasoline of higher octane than what is stated in your owner's manual is a complete waste of money and can actually have negative effects. It can result in lower mileage, less power, more gunked up carbs, and hotter operating temperatures. This can all lead to premature clutch wear, breakdown of non metallic parts, corrosion of metallic parts, and the list goes on. Not because you are getting a hotter combustion, but because you are probably getting more ethanol by percentage, given that one of the ways modern fuel mixtures get their increased octane is to increase the purity or quantity of ethanol as opposed to increasing the purity of the gasoline. Engines are designed to run on certain fuels. They tell you what they designed it to run on. Take them at their word. If you are not going to take them at their word, then why don't you just run it on methanol. It has a tremendously higher octane level. , if you are just wanting to run higher octane.

Regular, running higher octane can cause predetonation but this isn't such a problem in the colder months or even with water cooled engines in general. Running too high an octane rating will cause damage to the engine, and in newer engines that are more advanced will cause a lot of damage in a big hurry.
Manual said regular so I ran regular in the Shadow. Manual says regular in my FJR and that's all I run. Always follow the manual!
