Hey all,
So I've been scouring the internet looking for black parts for the engine. I am planning on getting some black tail pipes so I want to get rid of the chrome on the air cleaner cover, the alternator cover and the clutch cover. So for the chrome pieces, I think I'll take them to get blasted (sand or bead) and then get them black matte. So for a 2007 Honda Shadow VT750C2, would any of those parts be plastic? And could I find parts already in black and save that time and trouble? BTW, it's been raining for two days and it's cold, so I'm not going to pull parts off the bike to check... Thanks in advance! |

Hard to run electricity through plastic... Likely wouldn't care much for an oven either!
Just paint them. If their plastic than you should be able to get some plastic adhesion primer that will go over the fake chrome, than paint them.

My old vt700 was in a poor state so I painted the engine and exhausts with mat black engine paint, very thin, put it on with a brush and a little goes a long way..cost about 2 cents and took about 2 minutes so I can do it again when I need to.

I painted a lot of pieces of my old 750 Shadow. Pull the plastics off, sand em a bit and paint em. If it's metal and part of the motor that gets heat transferred to it, use high tempt heat paint.
I've got it all documented in a thread. Go thru the pages to see pictures of all of it. Just stole a Shadow. And I'm new!

That's what I thought, but my powder coater assured me that the chrome plating will make for a decent enough bond and that the base plastic could withstand the baking process. I'm going to drop my covers off with him next week. I'll let everybody know how it turns out

Its not chrome on the plastic parts. Chrome is also an electrolysis process, which needs the chromed part to be conductive.

If you are going to paint, I suggest you use an engine or header paint, that will withstand the occasional splash of gasoline, grease, oil, etc.
Another option, although a bit more expensive, is to buy an airbrush kit (badger makes one for about 25 bucks and uses canned air) or touch up spray gun, and use an epoxy type paint that has a catalyst mixed in. Dan
